To my ignorant young eyes, Georgetown and NC State both seem like programs with a lot of history, solid schools, and great locations for recruiting. I just feel like GTown could do better than hiring keatts and hoping to make the tournament in a few years
Agreed. I donât think Keatts would be a bad hire, theyâd just be constantly a little disappointed and eventually (5-6 seasons) fire him.
That was 40 yrs ago storied yes but relevant? I donât remember that team no way a 19 yr old has any point of reference outside of jimmy v week
Id argue Georgetown has the better location and potential. Even a stronger brand in terms or recognizable personalities and players.
Is Keats more marketable now or when he was hired?
I would argue bjg time basketball recruits now dont see the allure to going to Georgetown⌠@BDragon
The place is different. Back in Big Johns days the players were very cut off from the general student body etc.
Iâm getting strong Hopkins lacrosse vibes from Georgetown. That program is finished.
Disagree. All it takes is that one coach. I mean TT went from literal tumbleweeds to the NC game and top of the conference finishes in the BIG12. Lubbock is not DC. You can win BIG with that recruiting footprint. Just ask the old Villanova coach.
If they hired Cooley I think heâd come in, take control of the DMV, and have GâTown back in the tournament by year 3. Donât know if he would ever get them back to being elite like they were under OG Thompson, but they would at the very least be stable again.
Georgetown is a mid-major program and plays in front of >5000 fans in an empty NBA arena. Gtown will never be a power again in todayâs landscape. For a recruit, Maryland is objectively better in every category v. Gtown in terms of a program. Sure, every now and then some guy might be intrigued by Gtown for whatever reason, but they are not going to ever run DMV. Gtown is a non-player in terms of NIL.
We disagree and we will see. Thatâs the beauty of sport. There is always a next season for the program if not necessarily for the players or coaches.
Thatâs fair, but as the old saying goes, âhope is not a strategyâ - Gtown is objectively less desirable than UMd in every category, present and future.
For sure itâs very different and for the first time in 40yrs thereâs 0 BiG John vibes around. But comparerto NC state i think gt has more to offer with location and some recent success with a final 4 in the last 20 yrs.
Not much but again more than Gugs
College park is a shithole and northwest DC is not
lol now THATâs the recruiting line thatâll be sure to put Gtown back on the map lolol Thatâs really going to play well. Hope they run with itâŚ
This is a good question. I think more marketable when he was hired. Heâs done well enough to feel secure enough at NC State, but not so well that anyone else would be super excited to have him run their program. Heâs basically in the Mike Anderson zone (except fortunately not at a program where Rick Pitino could drive to from his current house â as long as he doesnât mind those bridges â which is why the Johnnies need to build the heliport).
Makes sense to me. No comparison at all between College Park and Georgetown. Iâm not sure what the facilities look at GT nowadays but they definitely needed some work last time I was on campus 8 or so years ago. The home games in the Capital One center also donât do them any favors.
Itâs tough to get a read on what that program will do next since basically no one has seen GT without Big Johnâs fingerprints on it. They likely held on to JT3 too long and Ewing never should have been hired. Now they got to find a way to dig out of that hole.
Side note: is there an example of a college basketball team that has managed to create a good atmosphere in a NBA arena? Maybe Nova in Wells Fargo?
Nova is the only example I can think of with DePaul and GT on the other end of the spectrum
