2023 Off-Season Basketball - Outside UVa

Was Sheppard’s dad a crazy athlete, or am I misremembering?

Internet verdict is yes (at least in terms of leaping ability). When we were recruiting Reed, I didn’t think he had Dad’s athleticism but it seems like he’s getting closer now…

Yea. Pretty crazy athletically. Reed just looks more complete. From highlights he is everywhere on D. Unreal anticipation

While I agree, Cal has used a two-traditional-big lineup as a crutch for so long, it’s the only way he knows how to coach now. But with only Bradshaw, Mitchell, and Onyenso in the front-court, he’ll have to adjust and play a lot of small ball — which will make him draw up new offensive and defensive plays.

Could work — but can you teach an old dog new tricks?

How many viable options do they have? They had to replace their head coach in June. They promote an assistant to the HC position, and it is a bit less than likely that they will retain him at the end of the year. At the end of next season, WVU will hire the head coach they want (or someone close). So… There aren’t that many experienced assistant coaches available, and, of those that are, how many are interested in a one year gig? The likely options are convincing someone to come out of retirement for a year, or getting someone young with no experience. I suspect the latter is the cheaper way to go, and it won’t make much difference. The roster has been decimated. I imagine next year will be a bit of a disaster. Louisville-like! Next spring they’ll hit the re-start button.

Sort of surprised they didn’t reach out (or maybe they did) to Beilein as a transition HC for a year or two to develop one of the assistants as AHC.

I saw some mixed messages about this on the WVU board. Some were claiming that Beinlein was approached and wasn’t interested. Of course, this isn’t something WVU would want made public, and I suspect Beinlein has enough character to refrain from commenting on the subject.

Good point. Cal hasn’t exactly knocked it out of the park the last couple years with maxing out his talent / finding the right combos / and sticking with the right combos once he’s found them.

I thought I heard that they did at least reach out, but I might not have that right.

3 steals, almost as many as Chapman had at the Apple Store

I knew it was coming!

Well according to Huggins, he’s still the coach

Edit: technically, his position is that he was improperly fired, but that’s less funny.

Just reinforces that Tony is an amazing talent evaluator.

And teams like Kentucky *likely get invited to play EVERY year, so they get 3-4 extra opportunities to play high level competition and prepare AND PRACTICE for the season than everyone else in the country.

I can’t believe that these events would want big programs to participate

@HoozGotNext does Tony even want to participate in these summer tournaments? Seems like UVA would have been a good pick for the World University Games as an example.

I was just gonna say that in response to @norfolk_hoo and @Gna2r. I think we would have had a window, post-natty, to do more of this type of stuff, but (1) Covid, and (2) Tony basically preferring to tamp down hype / coverage / expectations, were working against us.

I can’t believe that you’re trying to insinuate that it’s okay to exercise elitism in a sport in which the NCAA/rules committee are supposed to keep the playing field even.

I guess I disagree that one of the goals of the NCAA is to keep the playing field even. (I’d probably prefer it if it were one of their goals, to a certain extent. But keeping the playing field even in all of D-1 would involve UVa getting less stuff, not more, if you consider all 360+ teams)

I don’t know anything about it.

I don’t know much about it, but I do know that Tony has box scores ripped away from fans when we play in the summer, so I think one can draw reasonable inferences about Tony’s feelings about playing in a televised tourney in the summer.
