2023 Off-Season Basketball - Outside UVa

Hunter Dickinson is the “best player in the history of the transfer portal?”

Also, wonder what F-powski’s PPG average would have been if he didn’t go 0-for Charlottesville? Loser.

Meh. Elijah Gertrude flying below the radar. Also, UNC is being hyped way too much, imo – AGAIN. We’ll see, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they don’t finish in the top 2 or 3 in the ACC. Not impressed with Hubert yet, and I don’t see much, if any, impact from the portal additions being touted, given what they lost.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your skepticism about them, but their only significant loss was Love. They have pretty good transfers and at least one impact freshman. On paper at least, they should be pretty good, Hubert’s ability to deliver results may be the wildcard.

And I honestly believe losing Love is going to be addition by subtraction. You can’t have a player shooting that much on such trash percentages. He had moments, but he was phenomenally inconsistent.

But, like you said, remains to be seen whether Hubert can really coach them to achieve something beyond their talent level or if they just caught lightening in a bottle in that one tourney run.

This would be gross if it happens. Flory is… very good

For this coming year?

College hoops media have fallen in love with those immobile bigs who are good college players but aren’t good enough to play in the modern NBA, so they hang around and collect NIL. They’re good, but they are not that good. Like last year, Hunter was such a good college player that he and two first rounders couldn’t even make the tourney. I mean, wow, congrats.

I mean Dook is gonna get their fair share of beasts, it happens.

Will be intriguing to see how Bidunga plays at the college and NBA level, his athleticism is absurd for a guy who is 6’8 but he’s more of a blue collar post player offensively. He’s an ‘undersized’ 5 even if his leaping ability makes up for it and then some.

No I’m pretty sure it would be for 24-25

Yep. And the 2022 NPOY was basically not wanted back by Kentucky this upcoming year

Your points are good, but I don’t think they replace the defense of Leaky Black with any transfers. Whether Caleb leaving is addition by subtraction (which I have heard a lot, and don’t necessarily disagree with) remains to be seen. Nance wasn’t what they were hoping he would be, but he did average double digits. Cadeau is a wildcard; he may be great right away, or he may flounder at first. The rest just seem to me like average players who played for poor teams.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they will be a good team, but I am not sold on the hype.

Yeah, I don’t think we disagree on all that much re UNC. I’m skeptical that they’ll be elite next year too. That said, does pre-season #2 in the ACC constitute hype? Miami will probably be good again, but it remains to be seen if they can replace Wong. There are a lot of question marks about us. Everyone else in the ACC seems kinda meh-hopefully Lousiville, FSU, and ND aren’t so terrible again.

I dunno, I think it’s fair to put them at a distant #2 to Duke.

I just think Hubert is buns

Clemson could be innaresting, but last year I thought their guards kinda stank, and Brownell’s offseason answer was to go get Joe Girard. Oh, and that kid from the Air Force. Because nothing strikes fear in the hearts of opposing teams like, “watch out league, we just grabbed a player from a service academy”

→ I do not acknowledge our home loss to Navy. It did not happen and there is no evidence of it.

They’ll have some experience, I guess and bringing back Hall is a big deal for them. Otherwise :person_shrugging:

That’s sort of what I’m saying though, Duke is the obvious favorite for the ACC, everyone else is a tier below and sort of jumbled together. Team X could be good, but it sort of depends on Y.

I agree with your characterization of the ACC. The stumbling block for me mentally – with regard to UNC! – is I have zero respect for Hubert Davis. I am very open to being disabused of this notion, but I am not impressed. Good coaches take teams and win at a level above the talent – for the most part – and the opposite seems to be true with him.

Damnit Haney! I had completely forgotten that…

I remember the 2nd half of Baylor. Baylor was getting away with everything, but they also had UNC cold when Manek went out. Does he have a Manek on the roster now? If not, I remain unconvinced on Davis.

All that said, they’ll probably blitz some OOC teams and keep the hype train rolling. Or they’ll drop out of the polls at breakneck speed. I’m fairly positive we’ll be looking down on them come seeding time.

Yeah, big question mark on Hubey’s abilities - he seems like a nice guy though.

Totally agree regarding Davis. I meant to put in my post that he seems like a really nice guy; definitely not disrespecting him as a person.

While we are on “hype” it seems to me – and I honestly am not sure – that Miami might not be as good as the “way-too-early-top 25 polls” seem to predict. As I see it losing Wong and Miller is really difficult to overcome. I know Pack will step up, but they are a bit of a wildcard as well. Apparently the ACC is open at the top of the league except for Duke (and I absolutely hate saying that). It will be much more competitive among the higher echelon teams than the national “experts” seem to think, imo.
