I feel like we shouldn’t be treating bringing in Groves like bringing in BVP. BVP was a luxury transfer and created a log jam in the front court (kadin, Gardner, traudt and caffaro). That entire front court is now gone, we literally needed to field a roster this year, completely different.

The rest will be decided by two big “contests” …

Back-up PG: Rohde will get minutes no matter what. The question is whether he is enough of a back-up ball handler to push Harris out of the regular top 7? Does he have enough court vision to run point solo while still preserving his strengths?

Groves will take time in the front court, which means that Dunn will spend less time at the four. Which pushes him down to the three. Which takes minutes from Bond. Could push down Rohde at times too. Groves minutes will come at the expense of younger guys

I think I would counter with, where do we get shooting in the frontcourt next year without Groves? I feel like BVP was different because we had a young option who provided the same things. This year that was a glaring hole.

3 total players on the roster who could play big minutes before Groves came on board. No one who could stretch the floor. No reasonable coach is going into the season with that. If players transfer, they transfer.

Does Groves make us better next year? Probably. Does he improve our title chances? No. Does he hurt future title chances? If he pushes young talent out yes he does

This really gets at the issue for me. Are we interested in winning another title or are we looking to be a 4-10 seed consistently? Because our recent personnel decisions suggest the latter

If traudt was still here or we somehow brought in Stevenson, then I wouldn’t want Groves here but I’m not sure who he is blocking right now at the position.

We have 3 NBA prospects on the roster and 2-3 more that could be after 2 more years, I think. But TB and staff will have to figure out minutes and combinations etc

Groves is the only stretch 4 on the roster. He isn’t pushing anyone and all can co-exist. We are complaining for the sake of complaining this isn’t a BVP situation lol.

I mean he does. If the other guys like dunn, rohde imac are hits, then having a big who can stretch the floor will help uva go farther.

I agree there’s definitely a downside to Groves, to be debated how likely that downside is, but as pointed out, the major difference is he is providing a skill that we can’t reasonably expect from Bond / Dunn (stretching the floor as the 4). I am certainly hoping for it, though…
(but b/c nobody is agreeing with norfolk, and he’s making a reasonable point – Groves blocks minutes, potentially, for Bond and Dunn and Buchanan tangentially, and maybe even Rohde).

So if Groves wasn’t on the roster the minutes distribution wouldn’t change? We’d just not have someone on the court for those minutes

I think we are also making this assumption that bringing in transfers pushes people out. Igor isn’t that good. McCorkle wasn’t that good. Traudt is on record saying even if he played 30 minutes he would have left due to home sickness and that his family saw the redshirt as an opportunity to preserve a year rather than play it out like Dunn and McKneely did who earned a lot of playing time even with all the veteran players on last year’s team. And Traudt would have played a lot this year if he had stayed/we wouldn’t have brought in anyone.

Groves isn’t playing 40 minutes a night and the opportunity for Bond and Gertrude is still there. I doubt either of them is expecting 40 minutes a game themselves
