But he might play 25. And let’s say 10 of those go to Gertude and 10 go to Bond with five going somewhere else. May make a difference in retention

Again my issue is that the upside of Groves is that he takes a round of 32 team to a sweet 16 while the downside is that he pushes out top-100 talent that could be instrumental to a national title

I’d love bringing in Groves if he was the difference between a sweet 16 and a final four squad

To me this is a little bit of a weird counter argument. BVP didn’t play 40 min and still took playing time for other guys (for better or worse). Groves could play 25 min a game, and that’s still 25 min that would go to other guys. That’s a meaningful amount of time.

Anyway, we’ll see how it all plays out. Could be totally fine! But after this past year, I get the concern.

If they are good and play defense, they will play. Groves give this team flexbility to play Bond and Gertrude more because they have shooting downlow. If there is no Groves, then you need more shooting out of the 2/3 and that means less time for Gertrude or Bond.

The only player who should be upset about Groves is probably Minor.

I dont think Rohde. I think if Leon really really works he is the type that could get in the conversation. The rest is my list like yours

We agree on the bonafides yes

But Im saying we havent really lost any Hunter or Jerome or Guy type talents because of this conundrum. And he’s a one year player. Bond and Gertrude are both first years, one knows he’s a 4-5 year player who has said such and the other is coming off an acl injury and should know that it might take a year or two. And the “hurdle” isn’t even a positional overlap and only here for 1 year.

Gertrude and Bond shouldnt be fearing Groves. They should be “fearing” the addition of Kon in 2024 potentially. Especially if we add a 2024 pg as well, given every freshmen pg to play for Tony at UVA has eventually started their first year.

When Elijah gets acclimated on D it will be impossible to keep him off the court.

Now what Im saying is if Gertrude is still behind come summer workouts, redshirt that mofo and have him develop into a pg with Reece training him and watching film with Tony one on one and Tony telling him “you are our 2024/next point guard” and then only take Kon at guard in 2024.

Hoo said he is behind?

Is this because you think the Dunn/Groves combo will see a lot of time?

To go from ACL recovery straight into competing for a guard spot with Reece McKneely and two guys who have D1 experience under there belt is an uphill climb. Not saying he’s not up to the challenge but it’s going to be a battle this summer.

We can’t forget Murray, he has shown flashes. I know it was specifically one game (Big 10/ACC Iowa game @ home) but he looked decent in the ACC tournament.

Transfer risks are high, especially with no potential sit-a-year and the need for instant gratification.

Beginning of the year 2 Deep:
Beekman/Dante
Imac/Rhode
Murray/Bond
Dunn/Groves
Minor/Buchanan

Gertrude redshirts and transfers:roll_eyes::joy:

I think rotation 8 & 9 will actually get 10 minutes a game by year end. Dunn will get a lot of burn at the 3-5 position and log 30 plus minutes a ganw which will free up more player rotarion minutes.

Remember in 2018-19 we had a solid 8 Man rotation(Ty, Guy, Kihei, Hunter, Salt, Mamadi, Huff, Braxton). This team is not as “Top End” heavy which i believe opens the door for a few minutes for the 9th spot. Ty, Guy, Kihei, Hunter, Salt, Mamadi, Huff, Braxton.

This. And then make Kon a one man ‘24 class. Biggest issue to Gertrude’s minutes imo is that he and Mckneely are both 6’3 non point guards.

This is a fairly common combo across college hoops (though it’s nice to have a jumbo 3 as an option). I think our distaste for it is more related to putting two non-shooting PGs on the court at the same time. Esp. when one of them has trouble playing off ball.

Im at the point where kids transfer. Land other kids in high school and the portal. Cream rises to the top.

Tony lost 4 of his 6 original commits and the two that stayed lead us to the our first acc tournament title in like 40 years.

Lost Thompson Shayok Reuter Nichols. Won a national title.

Traudt was our first transfer that I truly believe we will feel the pain, but the cited reason is severe homesickness. :person_shrugging:

yeah, 5 will be very situational imo. Minor and Groves are two incomplete players but afford CTB to play different ways.

I’m 100% ready to watch the summer highlights of him getting off the bus. Gonna be great!

Transfers suck but they are going to happen. No reason to have expected Dunn to play given what uva was bringing back but he completely took out of a lot of upperclassman by playing well and offering a skill set that uva didn’t have
