It’s kind of the opposite of Bronco’s last year where we had a couple wins that were hanging by a thread that could easily have been losses.
I’m not completely discouraged by the play on the field except for the marked lack of discipline. That bothers me a lot. The coaches need to put their feet down on that even if it costs a game. We’re not going anywhere this season anyway.
I am encouraged by the QB play. The kid has a ton of moxie.
I am discouraged by recruiting. I thought this staff was built to recruit and they’re falling flat. I keep thinking it is more UVA than this staff that’s the problem and there’s not much cure for it.
At least the effing hokies suck too. We don’t have to deal with a lot of their nonsense because they have their own issues.
Yes and no. This staff isn’t Deion and we’re not Colorado. But Colandrea, Pace, and Washington (and to some degree Robinson and Walker) were all brought in by the current staff.
The way I read this is he is Brett Favre lite… remember they always described him as a gunslinger. Would throw for 400 yards for 3 TDs but throw 3 or 4 very sketchy balls a game and have 20 INTs a season. I don’t hate Brett Favre, but if I had been a fan of his teams, I might’ve had several coronaries over the years… but also celebrated a Super Bowl.
So if AC is Brett Favre lite… I’m okay with that. Take the good w/ the inherent bad. I’m ready for a gunslinger for the next few years.
At some point the staff should be able to assemble a team that can beat Wake most seasons. To me, that is the bellwether for our program. Wake has all our academic restrictions (if not more) and tougher challenges with fan enthusiasm and recruiting reach.
Our ranking doesn’t look great, but Colandrea, Kam Robinson, Suderian Harrison, Jaden Gibson, Jason Hammond, Anthony Britton, and Dre Walker are all performing well (in some cases, far beyond expectation).
And many young guys are getting serious playing time that should prepare them for next year. We have to clean up the OL and improve tackling/physicality on defense, but there’s a lot to like with the core young talent on the team.
The Athletic ranks every team every week, 1-133. Well this week UVA and VT have both dropped out of the top 100. They are 101 and we’re 102. BC is the worst ACC school at 108.
Funny thing is, I just to compare Brennan Armstrong to Brett Favre. similar builds, looked similar running it too.
Re: AC, the bottom line is he’s a 3-star true freshman with only three games under his belt behind a sh*t-show offensive line and he spent the offseason getting primarily 2nd team reps. I’m not judging anything about his performance so far. It’s not his fault the staff’s poor positional depth management put him in this situation, and the INTs say nothing about his long term potential other than he, like every other 3-star true freshman QB ever, should be redshirting this year.
I agree, his interceptions cannot be held against him at this stage. Give him a season and a fair offensive line and we’ll see what happens. I like what I’ve seen so far.
Favre was a righty. He did run a good bit on scrambles, particularly around the end zone. Was rather reckless with the ball at times.
When Favre had a coach that really held his feet to the fire in terms of using good technique, he was a very good QB (obviously in the HOF). When they didn’t stay on him about that, he’d start using sloppy footwork and would force a lot of throws and rack up interceptions. He tried to win games by himself too often when the Packers didn’t have their better teams.
I’m hoping Jordan Love is more Bart Starr than Favre. He’s not Rodgers. Rodgers was the most accurate passer with a big arm that I’ve ever seen. I have other issues with Rodgers and I think he’s failed miserably at leadership the last several years so I’m not unhappy that he’s gone. Love has to play within himself. Make the smart throws, and not try to force things. I like what I’ve seen this season so far. He’s been better than I expected.
AC has all the resources and tools to be very good long term if he progresses over the course of this season and the offseason. Yes a First year QB is going to have growing pains, but part of that maturation process is understanding when to pull in that gunslinger mentality. I’ll always worry anytime I see a QB turning the ball over and will lean towards picking the guy who doesn’t especially when on a team that cannot afford to give up possession which Virginia will be throughout his tenure on Grounds.
I think AC’s personality is what you want to see from a young QB learning on the job he doesn’t seem to take much to heart and is aggressive.
He’s not Aaron Brooks for a few reasons, but if he can be on that level the Hoos will be just fine.
Yeah, I made the Majik comparison too - don’t know if it was here or elsewhere. Kid is a playmaker. Feel bad for Muskett but gotta make way for talent.
