Sounds like it could be a fun weekend, although itās annoying we have a home football game that weekend.
Yeah, that will be interesting. From the Charleston Open final last year, it looks like the side of the court nearest to the camera gets some shadows from the overhang thatās on one side of the stadium:

Not sure when in the day they played the match.
They need to make it a true outdoor game with double rims and chain nets/no nets.
Donāt forget playing it on blacktop. Since itās a scrimmage, teams should have to pick their 5, first to 11, win and stay on.
Growing up in the NJ burbs, we always called it Winners out or losers out. I adopted the make it / take it nomenclature later in life
Yes, Thjis, that is correct.
The weather prognosticators have predicted a very low hurricane count due to El Nino.
Ah, right! Just remembered that was Thijsās thing
This will be a fun event for fans. Coaches will look at it as a nice chance to break up the monotony of practicing and get out of Dodge (where is Dodge anyway?).
Players will look at it as a dunk contest and 3 pt shootout and a fun trip. Reserves will get a lot of court time! Almost nothing will be gleaned from this exhibition and it likely gets rained out anyway. But Iām in and may go, because Charleston is fun.
Also, pray for no injuries for either team. Thatās the risk in these fan-oriented exhibitions.
Arizona, I think. Dodge City? Maybe it only exists in movies.
I am also incredibly tempted because Charleston. We have some people there, and love it every time I visit.
Iām already going to Charleston in mid-October for a wedding, otherwise Iād be very interested in going too. Love visiting there.
Dodge City, Kansas
Kansas, Dodge City is in KS.
Defensive improvement came up in the VIP thread, but there wasnāt any VIP intel, so will just post my thoughts here, too:
A lot of different ways to look at this, but hereās a very crude way:
- Devin Tillis, 16 mpg - assumed replacement = Anya/Nolan; defense should be much better
- Jacari White, 18 mpg - assumed replacement = Dixon/Harmon/Gertrude; defense should be much better
- Malik Thomas, 23 mpg - assumed replacement = Harmon/Dixon/Nolan; defense should be better (not sure what to expect from Harmon on defense, tbh, so this could be much better)
- Dallin Hall, 28 mpg - assumed replacement = ???, Vide/Gertrude/Dixon (and a few more of Mallory). This oneās a bit of a wildcard, but Iāll go slightly better. Hall was tall for the position and strong and experience, but kind of a minus at other aspects. Subpar quickness / athleticism. And replacement is a question mark. Elijah has elite potential, but thatās just potential. Dixon would make us much better in those minutes, but I donāt really see him as a 1-for-1 Hall replacement. And Videās defense is a mystery box for me (profiles similarly to Hall: good size; not known for plus athleticism that Iām aware of).
- Ugo Onyenso, 19 mpg - assumed replacement = Anya/Ibe and more Grünloh. Best case scenario is slightly worse, and much worse is on the table, but Iāll go just plain old worse. Good outcome would be Grünloh can play 5+ more minutes and/or Ibe is ready to give 10 mpg with solid rim protection, and/or Anya can play plenty of small ball 5.
This highly scientific analysis balances out to at least a little better 85/200 mpg and at least slightly worse at 19 mpg.
Another thing thatās interesting about this is if I understand current rules correctly, the official start of practice is Sept 28 (42 days before first game), so this Vandy outdoor exhibition is before practice even officially starts.
Unless Iām counting days wrong, and this is basically equivalent to like midnight madness or whatever
EDIT - ABOVE IS WRONG. First game is Nov 2, so practice starts Sept 21 or so. Exhibition will be at the end of the first week of practice
If thatās true seems very likely that the format of that scrimmage will be even more casual than last yearās.
I think start of practice could be as early as 9/21 if you schedule a game on the first allowable day, which should be 11/2 based on this change that was adopted 2 seasons ago:
That date is also reflected in the playing season bylaw Figure 17-2 here:
Youāre right. Gemini fail (not me, of course, ha!).
F68 tipoff is Nov 2.
