🏀 2026 UVa Basketball Preseason

I don’t know about that. Georgetown hasn’t been relevant in a long time, not in well over a decade. They’ve had more single digit win seasons than winning seasons in the last 12 years with no winning conference seasons in that span. They’re nowhere near the top 4 of that conference in any way, shape, or form unless we’re looking at the last 40 years collectively.

Back when Miller threw out a big figure, I created a list of what seemed like $20M+ teams based on what we were hearing of player values, but can’t find it as the search function here is terrible. It wasn’t huge. But that was just my interpretation.

I don’t know that anyone has evidence one way or the other. I think there was an FOIA for public universities last year but even that wasn’t exactly clear.

Maybe Sean Miller and Rick Pitino are speaking truths. Or maybe two guys with sordid pasts in recruiting are leveraging their own fanbase/donor group. Or maybe it’s just a sound bite.

In either case it’s just my opinion or skepticism. It feels like with our collection of talent we’re in the upper third of spend. And/or we’re really good at getting players to take a discount. Doesn’t matter to me much which one is true.

Pitino allegedly was at least somewhat interested in Georgetown and the admin thought they were too pure for him. Would be an interesting world if he ended up choosing there

here is the list I came up with a bit ago:

We’re playing Vandy in an exhibition OUTDOORS in September.

Charleston at their tennis stadium.

Lol. Like last year’s Vandy exh, will tell us very little.

Really? I came away from that scrimmage thinking 1) Vandy looks like a top 15 team in terms of talent and 2) we seemed to be pretty evenly matched with them. In hindsight both of those seemed pretty spot on.

Just meant with the janky format. Hopefully we’ll get to actually watch this one.

Also, late Sept in Charleston is still dead of summer lol, could be hot, sticky, thunderstorms. Hell it’s actually hurricane season

Apparently you can play 4 exhibitions now, so hopefully we’ll get 3 other ‘normal’ ones.

I did have a concern recently about someone trying to move our DC game to outdoors at the White House since I believe Danny Hurley mentioned that would be a cool idea on the heels of the UFC event hosted there. So when I saw this announcement I was like oh crap maybe this means we want a practice game outdoors but then I remembered our DC game is supposed to be in February so probably not the best time for an outdoors game lol (also I think it’s confirmed to be at CapOne).

First, hope no one gets hurt if the court is slick like the Richmond Coliseum Mich St game. Second, that’ll be a really fun event if the weather cooperates.

That’s a good call out. Assuming it’s played on wood and not the tennis surface, humidity/sweat could be a very real issue.

At the stadium built by Emma Navarro’s dad.

Now I’m imagining a clay court basketball game and am loving it. We can really put the “slide” into defensive slides!

I guess more relevantly, the stadium is a true stadium (10K capacity for tennis) in the way that major tennis tournaments have marquee venues. It looks pretty nice and hosts a lot of concerts in addition to tennis:

I don’t have access, but here’s a story about the basketball game getting scheduled:

For the weather curious, here’s where you can look up historical temps:

Using the North Charleston location (closer to the stadium than the Downtown location), Sep 27th 2025 had a high of 80, low of 72. Low 80s is the historical average high, though last year the 3 days before the 27th had highs in the low 90s.

You should be able to use Daniel Island for the historical. Some great bars and restaurants in the nearby town center.

But also remember Sept 27 is smack dab in the middle of hurricane season. Something to watch. I think the last hurricane/remnants to hit Daniel Island in late September was in 2020.

In the announcement our twitter account said Villanova not Vanderbilt. Perhaps a Freudian slip that we will be playing Nova again

I’m mostly curious about the shadows, could prove wonky shooting if you’re in the sun but the basket isn’t.

Score and ball back, you mean?
