I think that’s right. Def back w BA, more than likely without.
If I were a betting man, I’d bet in Armstrong coming back next season.
Tony Elliott will have talent to win 8+ games if we stay healthy. Don’t know that we’ll be deep, but we’ll be very solid week 1.
I’d sign up for that right now!
Offensive skill positions will be off the charts. MAJOR question marks in both trenches to call 8+ yet.
8 win season off a coaching change a 6 win yr and questions at all positions? That’s incredibly optimistic. 8 would be tough 8f all the pieces remained the same and simply progressed.
I’ll set to 22 season over/Under at 5.5 wins and I’d take the under right now.
I hear you (especially on the defense - who knows what that will look like), but are factoring into that estimate our schedule next year? One of the theoretically easiest ones we’ve had in recent years.
The schedule makes me optimistic for sure. But I’d rather lean to the side of caution. Theres a ton of moving pieces that have to come together and that’s not easy. It took an elite offense and some luck to lumber last years team to 6-6
We shouldn’t be expecting a bowl season next year. I remember when Bronco promised it at a basketball game before his first year and I was like “yeah right and that wasn’t a smart thing to say.” I hope Tony Football will be better at managing our expectations.
I guess it depends on what you mean by expect. As UVA fans should we be mad or disappointed if we don’t make a bowl next year? No. But trying to look at it from an outsider’s perspective any team with a Heisman caliber QB and two NFL level receivers should be able to get 6 wins against a schedule as easy as ours looks.
Since 1952 - UVA has had
Eight - 8 win seasons. (Welsh 4, Groh 2, Bronco 1, London 1)
Six - 9 win seasons. (Welsh 3, Groh 2, Bronco - 1)
One - 10 win season. - Welsh
8 of those 15 seasons were under George Welsh.
Welsh also won 7 games 6 times.
Virginia only has 8 Bowl wins in history ( Welsh 4, Groh 3, Bronco 1)
We are basically a 2 coach program in the modern era as far as success.
I’d agree with you if we didn’t just suddenly change coaches, with all the upheaval that brings.
Having watched Hokies yesterday and UNC today… My God the Hoos were a bad team last year. The gaudy offensive stats were lipstick on a pig
It makes me nervous anytime we are betting a teams success on their opponents inabilities. It’s not like Virginia is the only team in the country expecting better results next year after making changes.
The defense was atrocious. Honestly at times it is hard to imagine worse defensive results. The offense was a gimmick. A fun, high octane gimmick that at its best couldn’t do what it needed to do the most, keep the defense off the field.
Cant like and agree with this enough
I think the offense was very proficient at doing what it is supposed to do- score points. Not help the defense. This sorta seems like the football equivalent of blaming Kihei for Reece’s inability to shoot the three
Also UNC and VT were not good but they aren’t as bad as their bowl games. VT was playing with a skeleton crew. Bowl games are generally weird and a terrible way to gauge who is decent and who is not
In most circumstances I would agree, the objective of the offense is to score. I would argue that with a defense as inept as the most recent, and every coach on that team should have been able to recognize that, the offense should have been designed to possess the ball as long as possible, while scoring, to give the team the chance to win. Last year should have been a 4 win team at best if not for a good deal of luck. With a veteran o line and a stable of capable running backs, an Air Raid offense was, while fun, coaching malpractice. Just my opinion.
Bowl games arent great ways to evaluate a team. But we’re looking at UMD UNC VT SC and UVA all 6-6 teams about as level of a playing field as you’re gonna get.
It’s not like the defense spent a ton of time on the field either with its proclivity for giving up 80 yard runs and passes. I don’t think all the rest in the world would have prevented the blown coverages and terrible tackling.
