Blue/White scrimmage discussion

I’m just looking at Tony’s history here. Not aware of any transfers that have become NBA guys after leaving for a different system. One could argue that some of Tony’s players would’ve become NBA guys if they played in a different system but not sure who those would be. That being said, Dunn is unique. I guess we may not have a past player comparison for him

Mariel Shayok, if I’m not mistaken.

Yes, was going to mention him. Got drafted in the 2nd round, but didn’t stick in the NBA.

Shayok had a cup of coffee in the NBA and has been a top G leaguer after leaving for an all Big 12 first team season and Big 12 Tourney MVP.
KT Harrell left for Auburn and scored more than 18 pts per game in 2 seasons there.
He’s now director of operations at Final 4 program - Florida Atlantic.

Most of the players leaving Virginia have gone down a level in competition in search of playing time. They were unlikely NBA prospects. Shayok, Harrell, and Abdur-Rahim are the only ones I can recall, off the top of my head, making horizontal moves. (Horizontal in the sense of P6 program to P6 program.)

Ooops. I forgot McKoy and Morsell. Morsell remains a question mark.

What were the lineups last year? Was it roughly starters and backups?

I wonder how they do it this year. Seems like this year they could create some pretty balanced teams.

I haven’t been to the scrimmage since COVID arrived, but back then each team was a mix of starters and backups. As I recall, they also changed personnel around at the half.

Yep, that was last year too. Almost all Reece & Kihei running separate teams too, which made the offense flow better on both sides.

Yeah, I don’t like the business of changing rosters mid-game. Create two teams, and the competitive spirit will take over, making it more like a game than a practice.

Last year the women, with their small roster, had to play against some men (JV? managers? idk), and that understandably lit a fire. Made it more fun to watch.

Who won?

Didn’t the men win?

I sure hope so ha

The score seems weird, but this is what I dug up:

When it’s says “men’s basketball players” in the article, it is referring to practice players who are men that specifically practice with the women’s team, which is common.

Yes, that’s used by a lot of women’s programs. They’re usually former HS players and bigger, stronger, than the women.

A few of my friends at UVA were practice players when Debbie Ryan was still there. They got to practice against the US national team once too when they were in town for an exhibition against our women.

Yup very common. I hopped with the XU women’s team a few times. Was always a good run.

Yeah, the women won. Poor guys, the crowd was totally against them, it’s like playing for the Washington Generals

So, if on the 14th, Yonta Vaughn runs at me with a bucket in her hand, you’re sure it’s only confetti?

Man, if they actually did some of those gags at the B/W scrimmage… go ahead and build the statue of Mox now  Best scrimmage ever!

I enjoy watching women’s hoops. In general, they rely more on good team play and fundamentals. There are some dominant athletes but far fewer than in the men’s game. They remind me of men’s hoops in the 60s and 70s.

I’m anxious to see UVA become a relevant force in women’s hoops again!
