What eats at me to no end is how it just took an absolutely wild amount of things to go wrong – many of which were independently improbable, let alone collectively – to put us in this position. And damn near every possible thing did go wrong. Much in our control (obviously the finish against NC State), but tons outside of our control too.
For every single to thing to break this way is just outrageously unlikely. But hey, so was they way we won our final 3 games in 2019. That’s the beauty – and agony – of sports.
That’s why I’m convinced this season is our final karmic payment for 2019. A HELL of a lot of things went right for us to win that, and a HELL of a lot of things have gone wrong since then. This year has been almost as unlucky as 2019 was lucky so I think it’s the final balloon payment and then we’re clear.
If it’s karmic then 2019 was payment for 2018 and maybe Syracuse. A team that could have won it all did as payment for two teams that could have won it all that…didn’t.
This stank is fresh. And compared to winning a title, a meh team not making the tournament is not much to expect to have paid back.
Great point. This sucks but I’ll take the nati for it any day. At the end of the day this is a first weekend team ceiling so it’s a small price to play.
I’m also already convincing myself that this could all be good if it serves as the catalyst for change in the staffs approach moving forward. That would also be worth the sacrifice
I’m admittedly a pessimist but I don’t get why people want this team in the tourney anyway. Do we really think it’s capable of beating a higher seeded team on a neutral court in a pressure-filled environment? The inevitable loss (likely a blowout) is worse for UVA than not making the tournament at all.
Baseball just pulled off an improbable walk-off against Wake in the bottom of the 10th, after being down to our last strike in the bottom of the 9th (where we tied it on a HR).
