Clemson game thread (Tues 7pm)

Coach had him but little known fact is Bonner was already 45 years old and disparaging Virginia hoops on Jefferson Pilot as an intern behind the scenes guy

yep was good

I’ve always felt like Tony’s guiding principle is “First, do no harm.” This seems to underlie many of his choices:

  • his emphasis on defense (literally preventing harm!)
  • the 2-foul rule
  • emphasis on ball security (as opposed to efficient tradeoffs*)
  • preference for getting back on D rather than crashing the offensive glass
  • generally only taking the fast break if we have numbers or a clear lane
  • giving more minutes to “steady” guys over guys with ups and downs

I want to be very clear: I’m not saying any of this is bad! Obviously what he’s doing works. But if you’re ever confused by something he does, look to this principle, and it may explain it.

*To clarify this one with an example, because obviously ball security is inherently a good thing: If, for example, an entry pass has a 30% chance of being a turnover and a 70% chance of being an easy dunk, that’s 1.4 PPP, but Tony probably wouldn’t be comfortable with it.

CTB is reading this. He’s sticking with Gardner and BVP as starters but two minutes into the game will play Dunn and Shedrick together for the next 38 minutes. Shedrick will accumulate 16 fouls. We will win by 25. And he will do it just to spite you. #projections

Where this concerns me is with roster construction. Because there are a lot of transfers out there who don’t make a lot of mistakes but who don’t have high ceilings

I have a lot of thoughts on this. Mostly it’s about player development, youth, the broken system of recruiting rankings, and Tony’s slight bias for in-game experience. But I fear my treatise is best suited for another thread.

Dangit this is better than what I wrote.

We’ll coauthor the treatise.

We could make it a group project … I’ll be the guy that shows up late and contributes 2 off the cuff bullet points.

When I saw that I was fairly sure Ryan must have slapped Tony at the pre-game meal.

Yep. It was like two color commentators with no real PBP but was good.

I’ll be in the house tonight so hopefully, knock on wood, my attendance win streak continues!

I don’t feel great about tonight…

Hoping as well.
My win streak was broken on Sat. at Chapel Hill … not a bad streak considering they were all road games or neutral sites.
Was at the Wake game last 2 times including the OT game. Was at the first 2 rounds of the madness in Raleigh in 2016.
Was at the TW game winner at UNC.
At the ACC Tournament 2015 win over FSU

I feel much better about this one than @UNC. I knew that ass kicking was coming. I think we show up tonight.

Idk how to feel give how up and down Clemson has been. We could play way better and still lose if good Clemson shows up. We could not improve at all and win by 10+ if bad Clemson shows up

So weird.
Clemson is playing for first place in the ACC in the last week of the season and also playing to get off the bubble and into the madness…
Inconceivable!

Just hope I’m bringing the neutral site vibes from being at the Vegas tournament.

I don’t mean to put Clemson down as they’ve had some really nice stretches of play this year, especially when healthy. But I’ll be pretty bummed if we end up with a three game losing streak at the end of the seasons and third loss is to a Brad Brownell coached Clemson bubble team. Like… I still have some hopes for this season. Don’t do me like that.
