Sooooo…
Timmy is just yapping, I think. That’s a big number that quantifies the difference between what national team coaches are paid and what guys like Klopp are paid at the club level. Germany was able to get Nagelsmann on a discount to his club salary, but it was initially a short-term contract before he extended through the 2026 World Cup, and perhaps a sense of patriotic duty helped facilitate that.
The reporting I’ve seen seems to think Berhalter getting fired is a pretty live possibility. But the replacement names are probably not going to be the most globally exciting, but that’s par for the course with national teams.
Naglesman was having some off the field issues which had something to do with him getting canned at Bayern… he was the best person for the job as the best German manager not under contract at the time.
Who cares? I’d take Jason sudeikis over berhalter
When is Sullivan eligible for the national team? Not until he’s 18?
Oh I agree, any solid manager would be welcome, regardless of how well known they are. The USSF should have set a higher bar for being a two-cycle manager.
I’m just slightly annoyed that the talking heads are feeding unrealistic dreams about who might be interested in the job, especially since there was a search very recently and the known candidates were either American or had coached in America.
Cavan? Eligible whenever, but he’s only 14 still and hasn’t made his MLS debut. I imagine we will see him at the U17 World Cup next year as he continues to progress.
Well there you go:
Thank goodness. I’m not saying we’re going to get an amazing coach, but I’m pretty sure we’d seen the ceiling of what he could give us, and it was mediocre.
Yeah, he was both an improvement on the last two coaches (maybe three depending on your Bob Bradley opinion) and also deserving of being let go now. Things had run their course.
Even if they get a coach around the same level in terms of coaching ability, I think there’s value in having fresh eyes on the player pool that might allow for more upward (and downward) mobility on the depth chart.
I vote Bruce Arena for a 3rd time.
Thank goodness. Though if they replace him with Cherundolo as has been rumored I don’t think we’ll see much improvement. The USSF really needs to look outside of MLS.
Yea!
He had his moments, but it’s time.
Brian McBride… we would be thr best headball team in the entire world!
Define moments my brother
No shame in losing to the Dutch in r16 in 2022!
Ok, maybe I should have said singular “moment”.
It’s funny, because reaching round of 16 was a good accomplishment but I left that match thinking that it was clearly time to move on
I think that’s consistent. Bar should have been higher for granting a second cycle. Learning nothing from the Klinsi experience (shudders)
Yeah. I mean, r16 isn’t like a huge accomplishment or anything, but its a decent accomplishment and the US has only done it 4 times in 22 World Cups. The US has done better than that only twice, once in 2002 (which was a wild year, and clearly the high-water mark for US mens soccer) and once in 1930 when the US came in 3rd but it was a very different affair than today. So, its not a bad result.
The 1930 World Cup makes for fun reading. Only 13 teams competed (the Egyptian team missed the ship and Japan and Siam withdrew. Noteworthy that one of the teams was Siam), Uruguay hosted, and only 1 of the 4 Groups actually had 4 teams.
The US won its group by beating Paraguay and Belgium (in a match marked by heavy rain and snow?!?) but lost to Argentina in the semi-finals. The US and Yugoslavia didn’t play (possibly because the Yugoslavian team was upset by the refereeing in their match against host Uruguay. Who outscored their opponents by +12 over 4 matches, which is kinda ridiculous so maybe the Yugoslavs had a point), and the US had a better scoring differential so we got 3rd. Though the Yugoslav team also got a bronze medal, so who knows? Apparently the entire team got one bronze medal which was kept by the head of the Yugoslav football organization who made the trip and his family hung onto it for decades.
Honestly if it’s accomplished less than 25% of the time it’s an accomplishment.
