⛹️‍♂️ Elijah Gertrude - Official Thread

Right, if we wanted that we could have just given minutes to Malachi Poindexter.

The old buying a Ferrari but driving it like a minivan analogy.

  1. system: he’s tried quite a bit this year! Different variations of B/M, flow, and the triangle. Let the guys go for ‘stolks’ a bit more freely defensively then reigned it back in when it started getting exploited

  2. personnel: Seems to me there’s been a ton of experimentation here. Up to 8 or 9 guys who have started a game and 11 guys who have been in the rotation at various points. Don’t think the tweaking is done here either

  3. Well that kinda only comes with time

I think Tony’s tried a bunch of different things this year. He’s not going to completely change systems. That’s an offseason type of switch. And I’d be for it moving into next year (never been a big B/M guy). But within the confines of what a process oriented guy like Tony will adjust in season, I’ve been pretty pleased with the experimentation this year. Just don’t have the horses. And that’s on ‘GM Tony’

Gertrude is a Rorschach test, part 1 of several:

Part 2 of several, or maybe just 2, we shall see:

Part 3 of 2 (the rorschach-iness is getting beat on the drive)

Part 4 of 4, until I get bored again. Not doing anything really bad, not doing anything really good, and his man is sagging a bit:

I’m laughing by myself right now. Not because of the videos, but because that reminds me so much of Jamal. Flying around, playing too fast, throwing the ball over the court, turnovers everywhere, and then a great couple of plays in a row. They might be related!

One of the keys for me is that I don’t want Tony to turn Eli into a robotic, blocker/mover “system” player who doesn’t make mistakes.

The clips posted above show that Eli has elite athleticism (like the kind of kid that goes to Kentucky, UNC and KU) that should be encouraged and allowed to flourish, even through a few mistakes (see comments way earlier in this thread about how Calipari handles Dillingham).

Not sure why I have become so invested in Elijah’s success, but, for whatever reason, I want him to be allowed to play free.

Remember that backdoor, reverse layup against Syracuse? he missed it, but the announcer said “oh wow” on the telecast. Many of us complain about 5-star athletes not choosing UVa; well, one did. His name is Elijah Gertrude. Let the man play through some mistakes.

Not saying it is going to happen, just that I hope it does…and soon.

Go HOOS. Play free. Have FUN. Beat GT.

The issues that year were quite simple. We had the worst production in the country from the 2 spot. We also had zero backup PG’s so it was a lot of Kihei having to create everything by himself.

That’s really hard to overcome

The 4th clip is a good one to discuss, because it’s tempting to see the bad spacing as a B-M issue, but I think even if you put Buchanan and Bond in more of a 5-out arrangement, their defenders are going to be happy to just stand in the same exact place, clogging the paint.

Bad finish but the go at Memphis dude one on one to the rim is fire.

Yeah, the Memphis drive leads to a decent shot, but there’s a great shot available if he can make that pass to Groves in the corner. Definitely love that he gets deep into the paint. Lol at Reece’s reaction to the bad pass, that’s pure 4th year PG stuff there.

Or go for the high degree of difficulty pass around Jourdain’s back, to RD!

It wont matter soon. He will just dunk it over the big man instead of pulling it back down. Very soon. I have seen it

That play is what an Elite Athlete being tentative looks like. A play that like 1 percent of college players can complete

I apologize, but I don’t have time to read all of these posts, so I know I am duplicating things; I read as far is it took for someone to finally say that Eli should be taking some of Rohde’s minutes. I have been a Rohde advocate due to his ballhandling skills and vision on the court…I have also been excited to see what Eli can do for many months. BUT I am honestly getting weary of seeing Rohde play 30 minutes with zeroes in the scoring column. I hope he is just having difficulty adjusting to playing in games with more talented opposition. I don’t see a significant downside to giving Eli some of Rohde’s minutes. I have a sneaky feeling that if Eli were playing 30 minutes – and I am NOT suggesting this – he would be contributing some scoring, which is considerably better than NO scoring.

It seems the primary debate is Eli or Harris, but I think this is the wrong way to look at the situation. It’s good to see Harris back and I suspect he will be playing a lot. To me it is Rohde throwing up bricks and contributing nothing in terms of scoring, or Eli with some of those minutes looking to score because you know Eli will be looking to score. “Well, Eli can’t shoot the 3.” Neither can Rohde as far as I can tell.

I am simply suggesting that it is worth trying. Eli’s offensive production has a higher ceiling than 0.

Yeah, I mostly agree here. I’ve been hesitant to cut Rohde’s minutes because he’s effectively been the 2nd PG on the floor that CTB loves. Great vision and passing, so while he’s had trouble getting his off shots off, he’s done an underappreciated job of creating for others.

But.

Now that Harris is back, we kinda don’t need that anymore. He’s a liability for rebounding, he’s shooting 40% from 2 and he has no “gravity” outside because he’s hitting 26% of his 3s. Teams want him to shoot from outside. He’s basically been the “no offense extra PG on the floor” which we all hate, but its been mitigated by Reece being “The Man” and carrying more weight (so its less of an issue if others aren’t) and Rohde being pretty tall so he’s more defensively troublesome than someone who’s 6’1" or whatever.

Harris is pretty inefficient offensively himself, but with his speed and aggression he’s at least bringing something to the table on offense we don’t otherwise have. Plus, with Harris in and Rohde out, its easier to put in someone at the 3 who helps us out on the boards (there’s an argument that Rohde is the single worst rebounder on the team whereas Eli is actually pretty good).

Good post, though we all know it’s not happening. You are ab right about the 30mpg and giving us nothing on offense, he just can’t shot right now. At least Eli will give us a mid range J or a drive or two. Rohde still gives us more playmaking and probably better D, but still think we could give Eli 10 of those mins at a +

Analytically, Rohde is one of the worst defenders on the team.

Definitive Haney breakdown of Rohde’s defense, but feel free to express all those other wrong opinions:

  • :eyes: Eye test – Good! He’s solid positionally, and slides well, and gets into passing lanes okay (but tbh, not that impactfully recently). He’s tall and fairly long for his position, but slight, and not that athletic at the ACC level.
  • :package: DBPM (box plus minus) – Not good! Lowest on the team above the walk-ons
  • :bulb: On/Off Overall (adjusted, no garbage) – Totally Neutral! Doesn’t matter.
  • :bulb: On/Off top 100 (adjusted, no garbage) – very slightly positive

I’m expecting a big chunk of Rohde’s minutes will now to go to Harris… which will at least alter the nature of the forum’s Elijah conversation.
