Read my mind hometeam
I wouldn’t mind seeing his time drop in the sub-30s, especially when he’s not able to get his shot or they aren’t going down. It’s not like our offense is doing great even when he’s playing but not scoring, so a couple minutes trying something different surely wouldn’t kill us.
I would hate to be a guard going up against anyone of them. I would have held my own against them 40 years ago on my home court.,lol
I hated guarding guys like Dante. You could never get leverage against short quick strong guards. Was alot easier guardinv like a 6’6 guy somehow
We gotta find Gertrude minutes. I get that CTB has never been an “invest in the future” guy, but this is a pretty special case. NBA level athleticism, coupled with fairly advance skills on offense (albeit with rough edges). Right now we’re giving 25-30 mpg to Rohde, and it’s looking like Harris is gonna get at least 8-12, which doesn’t leave any room for Eli. Rohde has been offensively awful as a scorer. Yes, he’s a sound ball handler and a good passer, but that only goes so far. He can’t get past his man off the bounce (he’s not even trying), and he’s shooting mid 20s from 3. Which a low enough percentage where guys generally shouldn’t try. And then Dante, a different profile, but we have a pretty good data set showing that he’s not a good shooter.
Why not give Eli some run? Might cost us some buckets here, get us some there, but NBA athleticism doesn’t find us often. Gotta get him some non garbage minutes from here on out. If we fail, why would he stay? iMac, Rohde, Bond, Taine presumably coming back, Bliss coming on board, and if Dunn stays, at least occasional minutes at the 3.
Was at the game last night. Every person around us was excited to see Eli play and they were all frustrated and confused as to why he wasn’t getting in at all.
Not sure if he has done something to Tony, but to go from playing decent minutes against aTm and Syracuse not playing at all against VT and GT…something is amiss.
I am expending way to much thought/energy into Eli’s success, but believe he is the kind of player we almost NEVER get at UVa. His dunks in pre-game are amazing (as were Bond’s) and Eli’s form on his jumper is very good. He did airball a few in warm-ups, but he hit a pretty high percentage (as did Ryan Dunn).
He needs to bend over a little more when dribbling to keep the ball closer to the ground, but other than that, he is incredibly talented and we need to get him minutes.
Go Hoos.
This is how I see it. I know the last 2 games were must win but I dont think those should have excluded Eli playing AND in 2 blow out road losses he played garbage minutes only. Almost like you are set up to fail that way
If you wanna do real things in say the NCAA tourney you need real guys which Elijah is
Watched St Johns again yesterday. Very similar case is Wilcher for them. Freshman PG back up. Pitino lets him play through tough stretches and it is paying off
Maximizing win odds on a per game basis is short sighted. And FWIW, what we saw earlier this season… I’m betting if Eli gets 8-12 on a regular basis, he’d be a net positive this season.
I also think Tony has a plan for him. Not sure what it is yet though haha
This should be the plan:
Louisville and notre dame coming up. Really hope those are games we can get out comfortably in and at least work him into the rotation. Not banking on us doing that but prob our best opportunities remaining in league play
Y’all were watching a different player than me in those early games. His numbers and defense were no bueno in the non cupcake games
How so on defense?
True
What.
Sometimes I wonder if folks listen to themselves here. We are hanging on by a neck hair to our tourney chances.
You can tell his defense will be elite and he showed flashes. But he started out of position on ball quite a few times, led to him losing a step on his guy, and someone had to rotate to cover or, often, he fouled.
Overall I think he’s a very good defender already, but can tell he’s relied on his athleticism primarily up to this point.
Dude seriously?
All the data points to him being the 2nd or 3rd best defender (Reece, Ryan and Eli) on the team and there is a huge gap to the 4th best.
Those 3 are elite defenders.
Remind me again which cupcakes he was thrown in against?
His first 9 appearances were:
Texas A&M, Syracuse, NC central (yes), Northeastern - a nail biter, at Memphis, Morgan State(yes), at Notre Dame, Louisville, and at Nc State who kept their starters in til the end.
Guess how many of those games Rohde was a better defender? Again by the data and eye test.
Twice… against cupcakes NC Central and Morgan State. And nominally better against Notre Dame - currently 14th in the ACC.
Yeah i think people just go with the majority and say stuff with nothing to back up their claim. Gertrude yeah hes been out of position on defense, guess what? Hes not alone. He has the speed and athleticism though to make a play after getting beat. Others dont. If eli was given half the minutes of rohde on consistent basis he would be the better player without question imo
I mean Eli is way better at basketball than Rohde. This is no secret
Our upside this season is what? Round of 32 at best? Giving an athletic talent that we don’t tend to see in these parts 8-12 mins per game in order to maximize odds in future seasons makes complete sense. And if he gets the minutes consistently, pretty certain he’d be a plus on the plus/minus. Too much talent not to make up for some rough edges with some sick plays on both sides.
