As @HoozGotNext said, they are being clear with Dunn/maybe Bobi that the plan for them at Virginia would be for them to come in and work/not get heavy minutes right out the gate. Doubt that’s the message to Phillips (doubt we are still pushing hard for Phillips from HGN’s feel for it but ya never know/he would be a day one starter but how would Traudt feel about that idk).
But man Bobi is such a perfect fit at the 4 between Traudt at the 5 and Bond at the three/four interchangeable with Bobi. Still think Igor is only here for two years on the fact that he’s already 19 and Europeans don’t tend to stay long regardless (he’ll probably head overseas to play pro if not the NBA after two seasons) so the pathway to time could be there.
I hope Bobi is willing to wait + develop on the bench because you’re right about how well he fits with that class of '22 group. Don’t think there’s really a way he sees significant minutes as a freshman but if Igor does leave after two years the path to a major role is there.
Based solely on my nonexistent expertise and my inability to glean anything of any real value watching highlight clips on mute because of the God awful music…I’ve wanted Bobi to be a Hoo from the start.
Based on everything I’ve seen and read, all the remaining recruits targeted by Coach Bennett would be excellent fits for Virginia (presuming that Klintman, Dunn, & Phillips are the remaining targets). I think we would be happy to have any of them. Since Mike Tobey was the last true frosh player to start immediately in the front court, I am a bit skeptical that any of those three would do so. This is especially true if Jayden Gardner returns for an extra year. I imagine that Isaac Traudt is the only member of the 2022 class who might start immediately, and I don’t think that that is a given. If Phillips or Klintman expect lots of immediate playing time, Virginia might not be their best choice, and I believe that the staff would be/has been honest with them about that. And, if I am right about this, which is something on which I would wager nothing, then Dunn may be the most logical recruit to be added to the 2022 class. Based on his interview, it would appear he sees himself as a project, too, which might suggest he would be more patient with limited playing time.
It’s great for normal people. Of course major college coaching attracts more people who are so competitive it’s a diagnosable disorder than level headed individuals.
Why I’m not taking any of the talk seriously until after an assistant goes out and sees Bobi in person. We’ve been hearing since January 3, 2018 that the staff is looking for the next Dre. This kid’s highlights are the closest yet. If Getter or Vandross gets to Kansas and Bobi actually looks like Dre against D1 talent we will pursue. Regardless of what is being said now or any concerns about roster construction. I’m confident Tony would take Dre 2.0 no matter who else is on the projected depth chart.
I don’t believe that there is a Dre 2.0. I think that that is a very unfair characterization for all parties concerned. I believe that there is an Igor 1.0, a Bobi 1.0, a Ryan 1.0, and a Julian 1.0. I hope one of the latter three finds his way into a Virginia uniform. Then, we can go from there and write a whole new chapter of UVa basketball, leaving the past in the past…
Think you are talking past me a bit. When it comes to actual players who suit up for Virginia I whole heartedly agree. Let them be their own person and player.
But for recruiting, and especially deciding whether to recruit a player, the staff absolutely uses roles based off former players. Both for evaluation and for how they pitch the recruits. And ‘the next Dre’ seems to be 1A to the ‘the next Brogdon’ in the molds we are almost always searching to fill.
When the staff is recruiting for specific roles, I imagine that they define those roles more broadly than by a reference to a former player. Certainly, they are looking for specific skill sets, but finding the unique combination of those skills sets possessed by someone from the past seems unlikely, if not very limiting, and referring to a Brogdon-like player or a Hunter-like player seems a bit lazy to me. But, that’s probably just me.
The recruits themselves often say things like “The coaches compare my game/potential role to Hunter” or something like that. Just a helpful way to reference things and understand things. Don’t think anyone is intending to be overly reductive or disrespect their games by doing so.
Yupp. 100% agree it’s a shortcut in communication. But I think it’s a necessary one for a bunch of people who have other things going on in their lives rather than a bad thing.
Also an easy way for the staff to get their point across to recruits. Especially now that we have so many guys in the NBA.
I think this is something they do with tape. They will break down a kid’s tape and show him his game compared to one of the guys who has succeeded at UVa in order to show him how he will fit in, the kind of role he can expect to play, etc. Always seems to make a big impression.
Maybe it’s just me, but this is a bit different than projecting a player to be the next “Malcolm Brogdon” or “DeAndre Hunter”. Showing him the role you anticipate he could assume seems like a very good idea to me, and is not the same as asking him to be someone else. Of course, this is probably all semantics and isn’t something with which to bother ourselves, but there isn’t much else to discuss… For the moment…
