⛹ Jacob Cofie - Official Thread

I work with a gentleman in Seattle who also coaches Rainier Beach HS part-time and is involved in the Rotary and AAU scene. He said he - and others - had been hoping Cofie would go to UVA for a long time now. Perfect fit. We got a good one…

#1 Ranked player in Washington… seems we’ve gotten a few best players in their states recently

Cofie’s handle reminds me a bit of the forwards who went through Kentucky in the late 2010’s. Don’t expect it to translate to the college game but it does show coordination and fluidity that should help with his more transferable skills

He’s already very fluid with his game and skill set. He also looks to be pretty built- to the point where he should play next year.

Yeah, I wouldn’t expect he will handle it like that against ACC level defenders. But it hopefully means he can take 1-3 dribbles and pass effectively (which is something we haven’t had in a while). And hopefully he is getting comfortable enough to take 2-3 catch and shoot 3s a game.

Cofie was more of a need than kon. Kon was a shiny luxury. Cofie is a NEED. Cofie is a future NBA player and will eventually be a star at UVA. More importantly Cofie wants to be here. Kon opted for NC Central …

Wow on that instagram video. Cofie and BB could form a special from court for us with their size, athleticism and skill. With Kon to Duke the most important piece is Mallory with his shooting/scoring, ability to pair with Bliss and be the change of pace backup PG. Hopefully we can get him early and he enrolls next year.

Mt. Si is more rural heading up to the mountains - wait til he plays Garfield, O’Dea, Rainier Beach, or Seattle Prep. Much better.

Was listening to top dogs the other day (UConn pod, for scrimmage nuggets- no dice) and Dauster said something a bit odd about Jaylin Stewart. He said that Seattle guys sometimes develop odd habits because they are mentored by Jamal Crawford, who is great but his stuff doesn’t always translate. But Brandon Roy was his HS coach, so why would Crawford have more of an influence? :man_shrugging:

Crawford helps run Seattle Rotary, the AAU program, which has more year-round influence. He also runs camps and an annual pro-am tournament that’s big here.

There’s a lot of overlap, of course, because the elite high school teams can also basically recruit the best kids in the area, whether they’re public or private, who mostly play Rotary.

Roy coaches Garfield on and off - depending on whether he thinks they can win the state championship, it seems. Both my kids went/go there. He and Crawford both seem to have mostly good influence. Kevin Porter aside (though he went to Rainier Beach).

Kind of amazing to have to have two parents each with two Garfield HS grads on this site - go Dawgs! A couple years ago, our daughter was working in Cairo and a GHS grad was visiting. They were out to lunch at some random place and saw another Garfield grad across the room - crazy!

Ah, thanks! I didn’t realize Crawford helped run the AAU program. I also didn’t realize that Roy only coached Garfield sparingly. And I didn’t realize any of it until I saw the game highlights when Cofie played Garfield.

yes - we should meet at the Attic sometime, too!

Did Gonzaga not recruit Cofie? Idk why they wouldn’t. Spent some time this AM watching his film since I hadn’t seen much before and I love his game. Reminds me of a slightly bigger Braxton. Legit size to be a big but enough skill & athleticism to be super versatile. Seems to have a really sturdy lower body already. I love the idea of pairing him with Blake (also would rub it in Gonzaga’s face seeing a frontcourt of dudes from their backyard).
