šŸ„ Lacrosse 25/26

The shocking news here for me is that Jerry’s site is paywalled. Who is paying for that?

The lacrosse subreddit has a lot to say about Mark Millon (spoiler: they don’t like him).

Relatively small community, so probably a lot of interaction on the club and prep lax scene, and lots of opportunities to get very personal beef’s going.

It’s worse in club soccer…

I highly doubt it… club soccer is bad… but the club lacrosse in South Richmond is insane.

It’s bad in all youth sports but lacrosse is a special breed.

  • Football type culture of in the way it’s coached (ish - don’t come at me)
  • Wealthy population
  • Mostly private school cliques - but that extends to the families/parents, we’re not talking just kids who went to school together, it’s the parents too
  • Would venture a higher percentage of former college players as parents than most sports

I played high level club soccer and am aware. My son did his elementary school level lacrosse season this past Spring and I’m just glad he hated it as much as I did.

And the large contingent of crossover hockey families don’t help. Hockey parents are the most insane of any sport

Listened to some of his pod this morning. Don’t bother, guys an idiot. Spent the entire time defending Lars. Which is fine, but here are A couple of examples:

  • Said lost the locker room and players had player only meetings halfway through the season and turned things around after rallying around their hatred for Lars. Somehow this guy paints as positive for Lars ability to motivate.
  • Acknowledged Lars had a formal HR complaint and some sort of probation/monitoring. Painted that as backstabbing within the program.
  • Talks about Lars outbursts - ā€œsome of them were really ridiculous and extremeā€ but normalizes it to ā€œhe’s quirkyā€ or ā€œyou need that sometimes for disciplineā€ or ā€œhappens everywhere you just don’t hear about itā€
  • Calls Carla a prick. (Might be true she doesn’t care for lacrosse but he offers no evidence for why other than she came from the SEC and is a prick according to him)

He pins it all on the assistant coaches basically.

I actually really like Lars and wish this hadn’t happened, but guys like that and the doogs character that keeps calling his departure a ā€œcoopā€ (yes, pronounces the p) are doing neither him or the lacrosse community any favors. Just comes off as clownish.

Me a week or two ago: my lax bro caricature is just that, a caricature…

Me now: :grimacing:

This info is 9 years out of date, but I do remember talking to someone who had attended practices in his first year here and been privy to things going on in the team and that person being kinda repulsed by his demeanor at practices (foul language-type of stuff) and what he was OK with in terms of players behaving badly (but legally) off-field (think fights were the big thing here). Figured that nothing ever bubbling up into a scandal since then meant that there wasn’t much too it.

Must’ve been a hell of a pep talk by Scheyer. Duke lost 14-7 to Princeton today.

If there is a ring face emoji it needs to be added. As much as Scheyer and his team are discussed on a UVA message board, the haters need options.

Just remember that lacrosse is a sport you start to play when you realize you aren’t good at any other sports. It’s the pickle-ball of NCAA athletics.

Yeah, man. Jim Brown played lax because he sucked at football.

Ok - I’ll admit there are exceptions. Fair point. I’m mainly trolling because the transfer portal has been more boring than Yentl, even with Streisand. (Young guys may have to Google this).

But it’s still slightly above fencing for athleticism, as evidenced by the reference to Jim Brown who played lacrosse for Syracuse from 1955-1957.

Truthfully, I’m just bored.

I’m sure you’re just kidding, but to be an outstanding lacrosse player, you need speed, athleticism, and great hand-eye coordination. Where I grew up, lacrosse was by far the favorite spring sport. I remember the varsity baseball coach complaining he couldn’t get any of the best athletes in school to play baseball because what boy didn’t want to run around a field and hit other kids with a stick.

I mean you’re not really wrong. You aren’t playing D1 football or basketball at 5’9 160 but you could be a lax all American

More importantly, if lacrosse went away, the financial markets would collapse without the steady stream of lax-bro’s populating the industry.

It actually looks fun, except for playing goalie, which seems like the worst position to play in all of sports. Those dudes must have a screw loose.

I bet most college PG’s would be total studs at lacrosse if they grew up playing it. Dallin Hall has the looks and the hair and the athleticism to be a stud lax-bro. Maybe he missed his true calling?
