If you had to predict with what you know today, where does Keels land?
I would guess Villanova right now⌠Nothing more than a hunch and I donât think itâs over. Just winding down.
And Devon Hall was the worst tourney player in UVA history â didnât step up.
Tea leaves donât seem to be in our favor here.
Where is Tu? He hearing anything from his people lately?
I just donât think Duke has developed PG in recent memory. The Jones brothers came in good. I also donât think Trent was that great at Duke and certainly donât remember him running the team. Arguments can be made that the last 2 years Duke was better at the beginning of the year than at the end. While I can see the attraction for a clear one and done I just donât see the player development. Of course I am not looking at it through the eyes of a 17 year old.
It seems like it is very fluid right now. One school one day, another the next. Feels like Duke and Villanova have been trending the last couple of weeks. Not much the staff can do if UVa isnât the choice. Heâs gonna play a ton at UVa his first year. And to Bennettâs credit, he wonât sugarcoat his pitch.
Yup.
If the chitter chatter is signaling something, and not a misdirection ploy to pick the HOOS, it will be frustrating for fans who followed the recruitment. But the doom and gloom, even with the repetitive âweâll be fineâ/#swiningthefences/#pocketthemallfor22 messages here and on other forums to reassure hoos, from our fan base will be explosive since many were hoping Keels would be a good news story for us in an age of mostly bad news lol
Eric, Iâm sure youâre a great guy, being a wahoo fan and all, but in this case you are just wrong.
The issue being debated, as I see it, is not whether CTBâs recruiting is âbeyond reproachâ but whether CTB has âearned our trustâ when it comes to recruiting young men into our program so that we can be reasonably assured of the pleasure of cheering for a consistently winning team. Put more simply, is CTB âgood at recruiting.â
Your view on this subject is that we cannot trust him. Your evidence is multiple weak classes and a so far barren 2021 class.
My view on this subject is that we won the most recently contested tournament to produce a national champion. My view on the subject is that, measuring by wins and losses, we have been the best program in the best conference in college basketball since at least 2013-14. My view on the subject is that those facts are not simply the result of superior in game coaching, quality of person, etc., but rather the result of those factors plus the ability to identify and attract talented athletes that fit his system and program culture. My view is that there is far more to success in recruiting than avg. class ranking or number of top 100 players signed. Success in recruiting is defined by success on the floor. Did we get the guys we needed to win? When we missed on plan A, did plan B turn out ok?
You see the 2018 class as an abject failure because it includes no highly rated prospects. I see a class that includes Kihei Clark, an instrumental piece of two teams/seasons with an average final league standing of 1.5 and 1 out of a possible 1 national championships.
I see the precise reason why CTB is to be trusted.
It would seem that Keels isnât through playing the recruiting game just yet. Have heard 3 different schools in the past 3 days.
I have taken all 3 with a large grain of salt, not due to the sources necessarily, just because of the recruitment being discussed.
When I said trust TB it was mostly in relation to this class. We just know what is going on behind the scenes and what his plan is. Recruiting is always unpredictable. Let just see how it all plays out. I believe the only person we have lost is Warley and I think most kids would have taken a promised starting spot at FSU over sitting behind Clark/Beekman in 21 and just coming off the bench as a utility man for us. We might not know how his good plan is until after the 22 class is signed because with out current depth 21 and 22 are really linked together.
I have a small hunch heâs gonna announce end of the month (his birthday) and his camp is gonna flood the market with info going all different directions until the actual date. Seems in line with how theyâve handled things publicly and on social media to date.
You mention coming off the bench as a utility man, but being truthful how do we know that Keels wouldnât come off the bench as a utility guy too? I think we truthfully just do t have a lot of room because Tony *did his job and recruited good talent along with the development of the rest of the team. We honestly could roll the ball out *this year and 10+ people could fill a role.
I have no idea how they are going to use any of the 21 recruits. Warley wasnât going to start PG but would have PG minutes as a SO with Beekman but it seemed that he was being recruited for the big guard slot. Maybe I am being overly optimistic but I think Morsell, Jabri, Murphy and McKoy are going to be pretty good in 21 so how much and where the potential 21âs are going to play is an interesting question. I would love to have Keels and Kaufman but if we strike out and load up in 22 that might work out ok for class balance.
Yeah its strange. Just glanced over the Duke 247 board and with Keels its all about still building that relationship with him and how their insiders are saying things are progressing well with some prospect but nothing is close to a decision yet. If I had to guess Duke or Nova (if itâs not us) and the commitment is like next week I say NOVA but Corey is saying something else. Could definitely end up at Duke but I am very bought into the idea of the misinformation being spread
They do seem to be doom and gloom in that Banchero is now being rumored to head to Tennessee and Patrick Baldwin Jr might be leaning more to Milwaukee with his dad. Maybe the put even more pressure on Keels. The insider did say that Keels is now target numero uno for guard for them. Again, I hope our program never becomes like theirs where they are solely dependent on needing to get specific recruits.
Keels daddy wants him to be a dukie it appears
Including 2021 weâve been a top 5 program in six of nine years.
Tony doesnât always use every scholarship. One might stay open.
Also, we have taken a (usually highly regarded) transfer in like seven of nine years. (Gill, Thompson, Nichols, Johnson, Key, Hauser, Murphy)
I think weâll be okay.
Based on what?
Withdrawn
And, as evidence of Coach Bennettâs recruiting ability, the team has more playable depth, or the reasonable potential of playable depth, than any Virginia squad I can remember over the last 50 years. And, the current team has the potential to compete at a very high level. Assuming that Virginia will use an eight man rotation for the foreseeable future, and assuming no unexpected attrition, it might be stated that the members of those rotations, for the next three years, are already on the team. Additionally, the recruitment of high school players and the recruitment of transfers cannot be considered separately. âRecruitmentâ is just that: It is filling the roster. So⌠There are no pressing needs, at the moment. Virginiaâs current recruiting is outstanding. Whatâs not to trust?
Couldnât agree more. Even if Carson were to redshirt we possibly have 11 guys (not sure about Shedrick this year) and 10 in 21 who should be able to take the court and contribute in some form. Everybody wants more good players but the current depth is impressive.
