March 2023 - ACC Hoops

Terq’s shooting numbers are abysmal and he doesn’t draw many FTs. Still #12 on the possessions-weighted RAPM leaderboard in the conference, so he’s not far away.

Here’s a game we can play: I’ll put the link for the possessions-weighted RAPM leaderboard below, who is the player lowest on the leaderboard that will make an all-ACC team?

https://hoop-explorer.com/PlayerLeaderboard?conf=ACC&gender=Men&sortBy=desc%3Adiff_adj_rapm_prod&tier=All&year=2022%2F23&

I’m going to go with Jesse Edwards at #37. Voters are going to assume he’s a big plus on defense because of his block numbers, but his defensive plus-minus numbers are not good, and Syracuse has been a mediocre-to-bad defensive team.

I’d go PJ Hall (#28).

Different subject: Do folks agree with Riffs that Capel and Brownell saved their jobs? If Pitt loses on Wednesday, I think they are sweating… Brownell pretty much needs to win it all just to get to Dayton. My guess is Capel gets a reprieve but Brownell is out.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that finishing third in the conference at Clemson is a more impressive coaching job than finishing third at Duke.

Minor detail but if they win the tournament then they can’t be in Dayton (unless the committee is REALLY down on the ACC).

Right, forgot that. I think that’s a rule? The 11s in Dayton can’t be auto bids…

It’s the last 4 at large teams and the bottom 4 overall.

Brownell is not going anywhere this year …

Gotta think Capel saved his job. That place was rocking this year haven’t seen that in nearly a decade at Pitt, has to count for something.

The thing with Pitt is almost everyone of consequence is out of eligibility after this year. Burton, Cummings, Elliott, and Sibande are all COVID seniors. That’s their entire perimeter they have to replace. Who knows if Dior Johnson ever plays a game for them. (I hope not: Does Pitt's response to Dior Johnson put sport above survivors?)

So it should be back to the drawing board for them next year. Curious to see how long Blake Hinson, who’s already a fifth year (two years lost to medical), wants to stay in college. I’m not optimistic they’re able to repeat as a Tourney barring an absurd transfer haul this summer.

Pitt and Miami will have to replace a bunch of production. Bring out the portal bags again. Might get lucky, probably not.

Wasnt Wong in the portal for a while last year before coming back to or staying at Miami?

Yup Ruiz dropped a big ol bag to keep him home.

I mean, I say this 49.9% seriously – give John Ruiz the COY award. He got Omier and Pack and convinced Wong to stay. I think that’s honestly more impressive than the achievements of whoever actually is going to win the award (and more important to the team’s success).

Or you could give it to Dick Bennett for getting us Bennett Vander Plas.

Indeed, you can seriously say that co title was bought and paid for.

Don’t forget Ruiz also got Miami back in the national headlines thanks to a probation/slap on the wrist with the Women’s team. That aint easy to do.

Was thinking about that wacky case again … if the NCAA COI and the NCAA enforcement department are having public spats in the official record about what the NIL rules are … what chance do the rest of us have of ever understanding them?

oh boy do I hope they flame out in March

That is really really embarrassing. CTB would never ever never let something like that go out from the official site

Holy shit - the ACC should fine them.
