March 2023 - ACC Hoops

Rumor has it he asked for his release from Minnesota because he didn’t like what he was seeing from the team and the coaching staff… and then he picks Louisville!!!

Turning down NIT just shows how broken their locker room is.

Hearing Bacot coming back. Love not. Davis leaning towards coming back (if convinced it’s “his” team)

I didn’t know it was possible there could be a game I hate more than Duke vs. UNC

More drama on the Tar Hole front, Caleb Love has deleted every UNC related post from his Instagram and changed his profile pic to text that says “You Can’t Break Me”.

I’m kinda sympathetic to him because I assume he’s been catching all sorts of awful comments on every social media account from angry UNC fans.

Would be the ideal scenario for the Heels

I do if it’s crossing into the personal. If it’s purely basketball I don’t. He sabotaged their entire season to improve his NBA status and couldn’t even successfully do that. He needs to learn from this and become a team player if he wants to stick in the league

I put the blame on Davis for that. You have to coach a guy like Love up more. Don’t play him if he’s jacking terrible shot after terrible shot. Just don’t. You know what he’s going to do, we’ve seen it forever.

For sure. For whatever reason Davis didn’t teach Love that basketball is a team sport.
These next 4-5 months of the process could be the most transformative of Love’s career if he has the right mentality. Could also end his career before it really begins if he has a bad attitude

Love became one of those nightmare scenarios for a coach. He was too good to bench. He takes terrible shots and isn’t the best team player, but he was immensely talented and Davis didn’t have a backup option that he could use to replace it. It’s a tough position to be in as a coach. I’m sure he was in Love’s ear all season but he just wasn’t hearing it and he knew he had the leash, likely been that way his entire career.

Davis is not cut out for this if he can’t bring himself to bench star players. Big lesson for Hubert as a newer head coach too

Far easier said than done especially when there’s not a clear competitive advantage to doing so.

It’s also far easier to lose games than win them lol if Hubert wants to go the easy way he’s not going to have a good career. Needs to learn and grow from this train wreck of a season

Especially with how nice of a guy Hubert is. He has to establish his authority with these guys early. Admittedly was trickier with this group because he started as their associate head coach and that dynamic is different. But he has to have more control over his future teams, and especially ball handlers, to win at a rate that’s acceptable at UNC

It’s not about taking the easy way out. Benching a player just to send a message doesn’t send the intended message. Only the people on the staff will understand which levers to pull when to get a team churning. Obviously UNC needed a lot more levers pulled but simply benching Love was not going to solve their problems. Hell having Bacot and Nance available for the full season likely changes the outlook of their season.

I’m sure he will learn and grow from this experience. He’s a first time HC, but he’s been around the block more than a few times. Not saying Davis is going to be a stud coach but I think he’ll be just fine.

I’m also sick to my stomach for putting this much time and thought into anything Carolina related, glad they are sitting home on a sofa somewhere.

This year concerns me because the issues they had are the exact shortcomings you worry about with people as nice as Hubert becoming head coaches. They are so nice they have a hard time establishing authority with the players. Maybe I’m reading way too much into things but if Hubert doesn’t work at UNC it will be because of the things we saw this year. He knows basketball that side of things won’t ever be a problem for Hubert.

The message ‘don’t lose games for your teammates by cranking 20 shots’ isn’t just to send a message. It’s to also give your team a chance in the specific game the player can’t hit the broad side of the barn.

That being said, I also don’t buy the notion that a message like that doesn’t resonate with the players. In reality, I think you are sending a bad message that resonates way stronger with the rest of the group by leaving a guy like Love in for 30+ min on a bad night. The rest for the team sees clearly that no matter how hard they work and no matter how poorly Caleb plays they still won’t get a chance. That’s not great for camaraderie in a locker room

Are we really critiquing H Davis for not restricting the minutes of a starting guard who is not playing well? Seems familiar.

Had the exact same thought and wanted to. Avoid making that comparison in an effort to not reignite the Kihei Wars

If we’re being honest Kihei should have sat most of the 2nd half against Duke if we were actually trying to win that game … was bad on offense and was being cooked by Roach.
Same should go for anyone else too if they are off.
