March 2023 - ACC Hoops

Why do you say that? A & M could’ve been a 6 but one seed line isn’t egregious. They have multiple really bad losses. Only 7-6 in Q1. They are only 25th on KenPom. Are they higher in other metrics?

Imo it’s reasonable to quibble if the current standards are the right ones but I have a hard time seeing how they were misapplied to Texas A&M

Musings from a college student visiting Greensboro and the ACCT for the first time:

  1. I can somewhat see the appeal of the city hosting the tournament in Greensboro. The city and venue is definitely built around hosting the ACC Tournament. The Hall of Champions is a fun pit stop before a tournament game.

  2. Parking isn’t as much of an issue as it would be in larger cities. There was ample parking at the arena, with much more minutes away from the venue.

  3. Not many restaurants or bars close to the Coliseum, not very friendly to the average fan who is walking from a restaurant to a game.

  4. It’s essentially a home game for any of the North Carolina schools. I expected the fans to be heavily favored towards Duke, but not to the extent that it was (at least 80% Duke fans).

  5. Being under 21 when your team scores 17 points in the first half of a winner-take-all game. I would have loved nothing more than to drown my sorrows in an adult beverage, but alas, it wasn’t it the cards.

Hope we make a run in the tournament to get the sour taste of losing to Duke out of my mouth. Also, DC next year should be a blast, ample restaurants and parking near Capital One, plenty of activities to do before the games, but most importantly: BARS!

There was some coach a few years back who figured out how to game the NET pretty well, but I can’t remember who it was right now, so I can’t check if he’s been successful at it since then.

RPI was game-able because 50% of the rating came from opponent’s winning percentage (not adjusted for any team strength at all), so a middling power conference team could load up their non-conference schedule with home games against teams expected to be at the top of low major conferences (and therefore end up with a pretty good winning percentage relative to their team strength) and then really good teams, because there was no penalty to getting smacked and some benefit to just having good teams on your schedule. Tim Miles did this at Colorado St and Jamie Dixon did this at Pitt.

Some of the details of how you could do this are in this old article: The Ratings Percentage Index Myth

I remember Mountain West schools playing D2 schools to game the system.

Parking was good. There was a line-up to get into the lot but we got right out after the game; the silver lining was Duke fans staying to watch them cut down the nets, allowing a quick escape.

Like I said in another thread, I was disappointed in the quality of Duke fans. But I figure most of them did not go actually go to the University.

And yes, some Gentleman Jack was indicated for the half-time score. Sorry you couldn’t get the medication you needed.

@BDragon or other ATL hoos: why is GT called the flats? Obvious answer is that it’s flat, but was curious about that.

Great question. My understanding is it has to do with the process it took to grade and level the area that is now Bobby Dodd. The name was picked during that time somehow. Which incidentally was done by convict labor so maybe we can flag it as problematic and get them to stop using it.

Thanks, interesting. Saw it referenced in the AD’s quote about Stoudamire. Welcome to the Flats, or something like that.

Yea it’s a real internal thing from what I can tell. Kinda like saying “grounds.” Not sure it’s really used outside of the school/fanbase

Hey Salty, what do you mean the “quality” of dook fans?

This really surprised me too. This is the first time I’d seen Duke play on a neutral court, and they had a lot more fans you know didn’t go to Duke, than I expected.

Let’s just say a lot looked like what you’d see at a VTech football game, and not the inside of a classroom at Duke.

I feel like the venn diagram of Duke basketball fans and VT football fans continues to have a ton of overlap.

“Lack thereof”. I’ve heard of poor losers but they are poor winners.

Wow, some of the UNC players’ parents (Love, Johnson, Dunn) went on record that the players voted on the NIT decision, and expressed their frustration about it: North Carolina players voted on whether to play in NIT, parents say

Letting the players decide seems like it a might be a good idea in certain situations, but the obvious downside is something like this: it won’t be too hard to figure out who voted against.

I don’t want to get into an extended discussion of leadership, blah blah blah [insert strained military analogy], but sometimes the coach has to follow and sometimes he has to lead, and I think this should’ve been the latter.

I’ve been back and forth on Hubert, but I don’t think how this all went down (and is still going down) speaks well of him.

Just the very fact of all the “Yes” votes going to their parents who then went to the media in less than 24 hours is pretty telling of how (un-) respected Hubert is/was in that locker room.

Hubert should’ve gone full Heel (pun intended) and said “We will be playing in the NIT, but I appreciate all the no votes, and I will be honoring your requests.”

Did the gossip thread, er, I mean transfer speculation thread get deleted? If so, good job

But I also still had like 155 more posts to read in there

I would also like to express similar sentiments. I stopped reading it yesterday because I was very uncomfortable with it. Beat Furman!!!
