Dont they have a million dollar setup fund?
yep, $1 million now for all sports.
If u just look at basketball.
The talent we have now 7 guys probably have a combined $150k in NIL value /year.
4 years and that’s 60% of the entire fund.
a wild example Arch Manning’s market value in NiL is $1.6 million a year.
Not saying the collective has to pay all of it. But the bigger the pool, the better the options we have.

Smart
I would love to hear which players decided not to come to Virginia because they weren’t getting paid enough, and where they wound up instead. It’s probably a very interesting list.
No idea about recent but I remember Thon Maker’s handler was asking for a few Gs in cash or something like that our staff was like “hmmm nope”. I remember that making me nervous about dealing with Mamadi’s handler at the time time.
Svi also comes to mind.
And or which ones dont stay for same absurd reason
I think its easy to recruit against us…u can say, u wont get early PT, u just play defense, not enough possessions to prepare u for the nba…then u add not getting paid…
It definitely weeds out a lot of people
A lot of this happening right now, using NIL to recruit your own roster to stay. Jackson-Davis is a fringe NBA pick I think, and Thompson is a potential super senior. Same thing going on with top transfer recruits.
……and we can’t compete. Awesome. I think I liked it better when all we had to do was compete against behind the scenes bag droppers
This could be part of Kihei’s calculus if he stays here, he’s still a UVA legend and can get some NIL off it, not 6 figures but not chump change either.
Can we enlist Paul Tudor Jones in the cause?
Edit: Or pay Kihei not to come back?
So the relevant competition here is NOT for transfers; it’s competing for your marginal draft guys to come back. IMO, this would be relevant literally only one guy in the Bennett era: Kyle Guy.
Not to belittle Kyle. It would’ve been huge if he had decided to come back. But he’s the only one we’ve lost in this situation, and we’ve had plenty of guys decide to come back in the same situation (borderline 2nd round guys or guys who had other pro options). Whatever UVa is doing to keep those guys around seems to be working just fine, since the guys in that TJD bucket we are losing seem to be guys who are (1) married, (2) have played for 3 years already, and (3) have won a natty.
If IU wants to pay guys like Race Thompson six figures, I mean, more power to them. For me, it’s yet another reason we just need to skip past this silly NIL middle ground and move right to actual six figure contracts with actual terms collectively bargained for like just about every other major sport except for college football, and where the University is the payor, just like it should be, since they’re the one receiving the economic benefit.
Another thought: there are so many stupid things going on in the NCAA right now, and a lot of them are because of stupid decisions the stupid NCAA made stupidly, thanks in no small part to the stupidest pandemic of my lifetime (shoutout Gary Parrish), so it makes it hard to disentangle all the stupid things from one another, especially for my stupid brain, but any way, I guess my main point, is let’s let this stupid 5 year rule we are dealing with now work its way through the system like a bad burrito before we draw any stupid conclusions.
Sincerely,
Stupid
I hear that UNC is exploring the same sort of NIL arrangement for Love and Bacot.
NIL is part of the process now. But it gives coaches a huge mulligan.
“Yeah- we recruited a bad kid who could handle the academics here, and we totally whiffed on this kids talent level, but there a 6’7” shooter from Northeast -southwest Mississippi State that can turn things around for us”. F that.
Plus- the violations are coming. Let’s get the right kids for our program from the start, and add people if there are injuries or transfers. But get it right on the front end. That’s how every coach should approach recruiting in my opinion.
And VT to a much lesser degree w Mutts and Aluma
If Love has played his way into the 1st round, he’s gotta go. He’s a streaky player, not sure he can boost his draft stock anymore. Bacot will never be a 1st rounder, he should stay 2 more seasons, get NIL checks, and become the all time leader in rebounds, points, etc at UNC. Then he can get some cash in Europe later.
70 percent is outright stealing
70% so KU is taking a 30% commission for what setting it up? After the players were the ones who are the star attraction and did the work (winning the nati)? That’s highway robbery.
am sure they are recouping “costs”. unreal
LRA gives the players and or charities 100 percent of what we are able to do here
shout out @Merch
