Youāre right KU will claim that and we all know itās a lie. The whole point of this was to keep greedy agents out of players pockets, not make the schools into even bigger pimps.
Shout out to LRA for that, itās why I havenāt had an issue buying stuff thatās signed by the players, happy to send them a few bucks.
The catās out of the bag fellas. This is the real world now and aināt nothing free. Personally I have no problem with Kansas taking a cut to cover costs or even profit. Business is business.
Iām not anti NIL, far from it. I propose if the going rate is a 30% agent fee by the Uni, then players should explore the free market and find a better rate.
But letās be clear, here. These kids didnāt ādo all the work.ā The Kansas brand has a lot to do with how much they can make. Itās a lot like a mobile game. Apple takes its cut, because without apple, nobody is playing your game. This market should be less monopolistic, but still thereās only 10-15 programs that will have the platform that can create NIL potential like a Kansas. We are not one of them.
There is a reason there are only 3 major music platforms and the vast vast majority acts are associated with them. Self distribution is hard. You pay Kansas 30% because 70% of 5x the revenue is more money.
Maybe Kansas is lining up million dollar deals where X percent makes sense. I have no idea. but say a kid gets couple hundred for autograph session, 30 sounds frivilous to me
True KU provides a unique platform with their previously established image etc. However, the music/promotor model doesnāt line up quite the same. Much like how SoundCloud opened the backdoor for more artist drive music, a different program could do the same for player flexibility in earning. If the athletes are only being paid commission on ticket sales there is a chance that a smaller or different school has a more rabid fanbase despite not having the KU name. Not talking about UVA at all, just being contrarian and poking holes.
Bottom line is, if Iām a player and I have the option of signing and playing with KU and that includes giving them my exclusive NIL rights and they get 30% then Iād at least want to explore and see if I can go to UNC, Tex, UCLA, UK, UL, Duke, or another passionate fanbase and get the same deal at 20 or 25%. Better yet, let me bet on myself go to a UVa, Auburn, TT, Oregon, sign a deal that allows me to freelance on my own in addition to, and then I go out and ink my own deals.
Oh, I am not advocating that the athletes should sign away their rights for all NIL to the schools. Iām saying in the case above, it seems like KU set up a tour for these guys, and Iām ok with them taking a cut for effectively ādistributingā them. If a guy signs a separate deal with the local Ford dealer, Iām not saying the school should get anything. And by the way, if these kids want to set up a lemonade stand by the side of the road and try to sell their autographs without the schoolās involvement, then they can do that too.
Theyāre taking 70% of revenue, not 70% of profits. Someoneās got to pay for the venues, travel, food and other expenses. I wonder if thatās all Kansas. Then again, if it were all Kansas, theyād say players keeping 100% of profits.
I think the players did pretty well for themselves here.
Thatās a good idea. I think it would be cool for UVA bball to do something similar on maybe the Friday night before a football game this fall. Way to meet the new guys and the rest of the team benefitting everyone (not just the top 7 - sorry Justin). I think an enhancement would be to have some kind of auction of team gear but not sure how that works with the shoe company deals.
I feel like he filed for bankruptcy at one point⦠and i think he has a fee ex-wives so thatās gonna slash into income. Also Daily was big onntour pre-Tiger which means he missed out on the big pay days.
