Correctly? It depends on what the coach wants to know. I kept stats for a few different coaches and different ones wanted to make sure they had different data points. When I asked them, all of them wanted to know how many passes for open looks resulted in made baskets for each player on the team. They wanted to make sure a guy got credit for executing a play or possession correctly or well.
Another stat they liked was when a help side defender caused a driver to stop and make a bad pass that resulted in a turnover. Again not a stat that shows up anywhere.
Other common stats requested by coaches not in box scores.
Screen assists - Jack Salt special
Deflections.
Fast breaks not completed when there was a numbers advantage.
Passes that resulted in shooting fouls for the recipient - effectively an assist.
Live ball turnovers vs dead ball turnovers.
Defensive Possessions that included a blocked shot but the opponent still scored.
Blocked shots that resulted in offensive rebounds that resulted in a basket or foul.
Thats all fine, it just isnāt ācorrectā to call that frankensteinās monster you made there his āoffensive ratingā
Anybody know where to find box scores with raw +/-? Kind of annoying how hard they make it to find that for college games. I used to get it off statbroadcast but theyāve limited access of that to media now.
I still go there. Hereās an example.

Thatās why I included his official rating. And will do so moving forward. However, if a pass generates a layup, I believe the passer is undervalued in that metric.
The official NCAA box scores have it. The āBox Score (PDF)ā link from our schedule page all have +/-
Here is the straight offensive and defensive ratings for ACC games:
Rk | Player | Ortg | DRtg |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Reece Beekman | 121.7 | 105.7 |
2 | Kadin Shedrick | 117.4 | 98.8 |
3 | Francisco Caffaro | 110.7 | 107.7 |
4 | Jayden Gardner | 110.5 | 111.6 |
5 | Kihei Clark | 105.2 | 111 |
6 | Armaan Franklin | 105 | 109.7 |
7 | Taine Murray | 103.9 | 112.4 |
8 | Kody Stattmann | 103 | 112 |
9 | Carson McCorkle | 72.6 | 119.8 |
10 | Igor Milicic Jr. | 72.5 | 111.7 |
11 | Chase Coleman | 0 | 120.2 |
12 | Malachi Poindexter | 0 | 115.2 |
Nice thanks! I get an error message on stat broadcast but the NCAA link has it cool!
Looks like the UVa home games are sequential (so I can find Miami and Louisville and Ga Tech coming up). How do you find away games? And do these update live?
Thanks!
Plus Minus for the game
1 Jayden Gardner +2
22 Francisco Caffaro +9
0 Kihei Clark -1
2 Reece Beekman +9
4 Armaan Franklin +2
21 Kadin Shedrick -8
23 Kody Stattmann -4
11 Malachi Poindexter -4
That -8 for Shedrick is wild.
Yeah - mostly coincided with being on the floor when Reece was out with fouls
Taine Murray:
How many times has Taine played starter minutes?
He has 3 games with more than 9 minutes against Power 5 teams.
In his 52 minutes played in those 3 games:
24 points, - that production per 40 minutes would be #1 on the team right now.
5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover
10/16 FGās (62.5%) #1 on team
6/12 3 Pt FGās (50%) #1 on team
Very curious to see what the offseason brings for the 3 Mās, in particular Igor and Taine.
In particular, do they stick around Cville trying to get bigger and working with someone like Altizer? Or do they go home and try to play in whatever FIBA tourneys are upcoming? I wonder whatās better for development.
Taine, in particular, really needs to play in some games. He sat watching the Breakers last year, and this year he is sitting watching our team play. Sorry** to ignite the practice v. play debate again, but the kid needs game reps against high-level comp. So, in some senses, a FIBA tourney might be nice. But he also needs to get bigger, stronger, etc. and maybe spend more time around the program (for whatever the offseason limits are).
** Not really sorry
I imagine itās hard for the international guys not to go home, at least for a little bit. Theyāre literally on the other side of the world from their families. Summer is long enough they can obviously visit family and do other stuff, but I guess Iād be surprised if they stayed in Charlottesville all summer.
And when given a chance to actually play meaningful minutes heās been outstanding.
Not good, not mediocre ⦠outstanding!
Fair, I guess I meant more, do they do a brief trip home but come back for the two (or however many) summer sessions, or do they hook back up with their international teams?
Iām not against a trip home to see Ma. Go see your mother! If you canāt see her, call your mother!
Weāre overdue for a summer trip. Hopefully we actually take one this year.
Good point, yeah. I think we were supposed to go to Italy in summer 2020.
If they are planning to stay at UVA the next 2 or 3 years I think they have to stay and practice and play a ton with the incoming freshmen who will arrive in June July.
