Stephen Malkmus was my neighbor on Shamrock our last year at UVA (87-88). He and his band (Ectoslavia) occasionally practiced in his house. My housemates and I thought they had a weird sound. I guess the joke was on us.
This brings me back!
I was in PK German in 06-07, helped bring music acts to UVA, remember we did a battle of the bands for students, Sparky’s Flaw (changed name to Parachute) won the 1st and Sons of Bill won the 2nd year.
Yep. I was trying to remember what was the name Parachute had you just took me back. That battle of the bands was used by SOB to record their first album. Years later I ended up dating a girl who was part of that group that helped with the battle of the bands thing. That was a fun time in the Charlottesville music scene.
Was gone by then - but another fun time in the Charlottesville music scene was when the drinking age was still 18. Lots of venues, lots of bands, lots of crowds, lots of $ for the bands. Still fun after that, but everything shrunk a bit.
Used to be good friends with Parachute singer Will Anderson all the way back in middle school. We went to Burley together
Awesome Dragon
Many of many talents
Well done young fella!!!
Dragon: thanks for the shout-out to great guy Joe Satriani, only performer I knew who ever toured with the Stones (our kids went to the same grade school). His occasional sideman, bass guitarist Stuart Hamm, is my distant cousin.
Cue Fresh re: Tex Beneke . . . .
Okay, here’s one for the crew. What is a song you heard on the car radio that was SO GOOD it made you pull over and park in a mall lot to hear how it ended?
Me:
- Temptations, Papa Was a Rolling Stone
- Grandmaster Flash, The Message
And yes, I am old
Seriously?!?! That’s freaking awesome. I love Satch. The lead guitarist from Sons of Bill turned me on to him when I was in middle school. I listened to his albums non-stop growing up. Saw him on the firsr G3 tour with Vai and Eric Johnson. He’s definitely onenof those musicians who’s songs played a prominent role in my life.
The Boombox! Was always a treat to stumble across that on the radio.
I used to record the Boombox on my crappy tape deck back in the day. Before that, the only time you could hear hip-hop on Cville radio was WTJU on random late nights. I feel like there was a DJ who went by “the Butcher” who used to do some live mixes but I may not be remembering the name accurately.
I did the same thing. Along with all my friends and we’d play those tapes all the time. I remember a DJ name Bone?!?! and those mixes were the epitome of late 90’s early 2k hip hop and it was awesome.
@WFS_HOO Finally some good music . I love the Allman Brothers.
