🩼 Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

LittleJohn’s was one thing but Michael’s is now gone? That makes me sad.

As a kid my dad would reserve a room at the Econo Lodge just down the sidewalk from U Hall for the games. There was a Chinese resturant beside it and my dad would tell us that the reason there are no cats around back at the dumpster is because the Chinese resturant was cooking them up and serving cat as the main course. Then he would straightway take us there to eat. Im still traumatized to this day

I remember those places. The motel is gone now, but was the Chinese place in the same building as the Afghan restaurant now?

Yup its an Afghani spot now. My crew and I stayed at that EconobLodge for almost wvery football home game 05-08ish closing. It was a hell hole. Once got free rooms for the weekend because the previous week we walked into a room that looked like a murder scene… good times

Lol. After my Dad finished grad school, we moved out of state for a couple of years, and would occasionally come back for a game when he was able to make it work with his schedule.

It was about a 3 hour drive to Cville and I remember asking him one time why we didn’t just stay there since it was so close to U-Hall. Remember him saying a tetanus shot shouldn’t be required to stay in a motel

I didn’t think it looked that bad at the time.

We stayed there many times. Had no problems …

It wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It worked for us as a group of 21-24 yr olds who wanted a cheap place to stay near grounds on a home game weekend. I also recall after the Clemson game in 07 or 08 we ended up having a pseudo party in our room before heading out to the corner. During the party, we set a microwave on fire while warming up some leftover Christian’s Pizza from the night before. My friend grabbed and chucked said microwave out into the parking lot where it remained for who knows how long and no one ever said a word to us about where or why it happened…

The good ol’ days

Dude thats the restaurant I am talking about! We used to try and park there when we lived in Lambeth second year. The owner was a woman that would always try and catch us

Great game of cat and mouse… no pun!

I stayed there with my little brother once… once circa 2007. Wonder if @BDragon was there as it was a footbal weekend

There’s a good chance I was. Generally went to most of the games during that time frame unless I had a rugby commitment.

Some friends of mine stayed at the EconoLodge for a football game during the '90s. They went into the office to request something innocuous, and the clerk was a complete dick to them. My friends let the dude know they didn’t appreciate his attitude so he pulled a gun on them. Hell hole is right.

Hahahhahaha. Careful what you ask for…

Did they like his attitude then?

I think it’s fairly safe to say they did not.

Yikes. The Haneys stayed there for drop-off night before my 1st year move-in day. I don’t remember it being notably good or bad – just a standard cruddy motel. But say what you will about the Haneys, we generally didn’t start armed conflict on our family trips.

Then have you ever truly family vacationed?

Proly confused the front desk ā€œsir can we get some towels? Also where do you stand on Willie Derschs playing time this year and do you think Ducharme should redshirt? One more thing on our rotations and offensive play calling… OK forget the towels… do you like Lacrosse?ā€

I’m pretty sure it was a Mexican joint called La Hacienda back when I was there - when I could dump El Tapatio hot sauce on everything and laugh later.

I remember La Hacienda. My first week at school, I went with my suitemates and we ordered ā€œMexican pizzaā€ with jalapenos. I led a sheltered childhood and wasn’t exposed to much ethnic food, so I was unfamiliar with jalapenos and I picked them off my portion – then tried to argue that I shouldn’t have to pay for them when we split the bill.

Man, I had a lot to learn.
