Yep, remember that place too.
And if you want to go way back, there used to be a pizza & sub place (canāt remember what it was called) in the next lot beside La Hacienda. Lot is empty now.
My Grandma used to take us there in like the late 70ās.

Man I forgot about La Hacienda. Only went a couple of times, but always liked it.
If I was still there, Iād miss all the live music places on the Corner or in very reasonable walking distance from the school: West Virginian, Mousetrap, 2nd floor Poeās (very short-lived), Pavillion XI, Mineshaft, Max/Trax + every frat house 2 or 3 nights in a row on big weekends (or 4 at Easters).
Anyone remember the band that used to play at all the fraternities w/ the female saxaphone player? I canāt remember the name⦠but they played EVERY frat party.
Baaba Seth
A Charlottesville staple. They played everything everywhere.
They had a song called āPoor Man Diesā that was actually kind of a jam. I havenāt thought of that band in 20+ years! Lol! (I was also somehow a degree or two of separation away from that sax player)
I thought Skip Castro was the band that played everywhere. Certainly seemed like it at the time.
Same I was pretty into the Charlottesville local music scene for most of my life. But that was one group I totally forgot about even when Iām reminiscing with other friends who were in the scene. I totally associate them with summer/spring good times.
Fun article from the UVa magazine about Baaba Seth, Sons of Bill (@BDragon - I think you mentioned that band ā after my time unfortunately), Skip Castro and those no-names DMB and Pavement.
I literally kept saying Boba Fett in my head⦠and I said they werenāt a Star Wars band⦠it was killing me! Thanks!
Oh man this is awesome. A huge chunk of my childhood and my life is tied up in there. The Sonās of Bill crew and I all grew up together and played music together. Bill and my mom had offices next to each other. I remember when they won the first Battle of the Bands in 05 and got the money to record their demo.
As I said Pavement, Baaba even DMB those were the sounds of my childhood in many ways.
Thx @haney for the trip down memory lane brought a smile to my face.
Here you go. Definitely a Rusted Root vibe, but jazzier. Fun times.
Tjās
Probably not what it was in the 70s, but I want to say that in the 90s it was a Chanelloās.
Back in the late 80s and early 90s my friends and i came often for football and basketball games and we usually stayed in that hellhole mainly because it wasnāt a bad rate and pretty close to everything. We didnāt get a gun pulled on us but probably should have. I did get locked up on one of them wild weekends
The best - great pic! Then there was a Shifflett on the grill. I remember someone asking him how many beers heād that day. 32. No one batted an eye.
I know the UD was owned by the Shifletts. The night grill man was Elwood Breeden
Thanks for helping my old fart memory. Elwood was indeed behind the counter. Never knew his last name, so I assumed Shifflett.
