đŸ©Œ Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

I think Pope might be living in Hampton now or that area. He was back in the Hopewell area for a time working with Wali Rainer on some community projects in the Tri Cities.

From what I can tell, Pope doesn’t really want the spotlight these days but that’s second hand info.

Indian River — Jason Capel.

In 1995, they lost in states to Kecoughtan with Marseilles Brown (Richmond/Hampton) and a big guy who ended up at Loyola (Abraham). They were really good.

Tyrone Robertson. Played for my high school coach, Harry Johnson. Coach Johnson retired after finally winning the state championship in '96. We never got close when I was in high school despite having Johnny Newman and Ferrell Edmunds in the same frontcourt. Although in my brother’s junior year ('79-'80), GW lost to a Garfield squad led by Othell Wilson in the Northwest Region final (state quarters).

The Chemical Pontiff! Still one of my all-time favorite nicknames for a UVA athlete.

My parents are selling their house so I had to pick up my baseball cards that have been in the attic for 30ish years.

I found an absolute gem.

Wish I could remember this dude. His look (the gold chains and chest hair, the stache) lives up to his name.

Really old memory - I’m pretty sure that the nicknames for Iavaroni and Koesters in their 1st year were Cisco and Bong. Trigger for this memory was song by War on my Sirius XM ride home.

I was talking to a friend who used to teach at the nuclear sub school or something in Florida and he started talking about his days serving on a sub and he called his crew mates Submariners. What got me curious is that he pronounced it sub and the name of the Seattle baseball team and I always thought is was submarine-ers. I trusted he was right since he actually served on a sub and I rode in one at Disney once.

Sub-mariner is correct

This is also correct

My dad wanted to go into the Navy and work on subs, but they told him he’d have to enlist for 6-years instead of 4
so he joined the Air Force instead

Here’s an old farts thought
.

From 1954 to 2013 (60 years), UVa went to 20 semifinals and six finals in the ACC Tournament, and none after 1995. It won one.

In the nine tournaments the Hoos have played since the 2014 tip in Greensboro, UVa has been to seven semis and four finals — winning two of them.

Regardless of how the NCAAT has turned out the past few attempts, we’re in the glory days of UVa hoops.

Man, that’s a lot of losing. I blame the lineups.

I agree. Losing 28.6% of conference tournament games over a decade is unacceptable.
