šŸ©¼ Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

Speaking of old school, there was an old Sabre/Vafootball.com poster with the handle ā€œDingleā€™s Berries.ā€

Was always worth a teen snicker when I saw him post.

(Pretty sure that same poster also had Gilligan Dele, among other uncomfortable monikers.)

UVA sports do it for sure.

Thatā€™s a question that gets asked a lot around my house if Malcolm will play football or rugby. And Iā€™ve been adamant about him not playing unless he truly wants to. Iā€™ll push him to basketball and other sports every time.

Didnā€™t know him well, but Dingle was a very nice guy.

Super nice guy. Joke was heā€™d walk into my momā€™s office and just go ā€œDean Walker, give me a hugā€ my mom is all of 5ā€™3 and a buck nothing on a good day so heā€™d basically swallow her up.

When I was prepping for my freshmen year of football he helped me a lot as well with some side/improtu sessions.

Wasnā€™t he the furniture store guy who used to raise ridiculous topics that were derisive about former UVA athletes like ā€œI remember such and such and is he over his drug addition issues?ā€

Man I forgot to hit you. Bunch of us went to STAB game on Friday. Even Kihei and Chase were there. My man Connor Lyons lit it up in the second half!

Nice! Yeah, Rose was DYING to be there but we had some family stuff going on. Connor was apparently bummed he didnā€™t make varsity last year but was obviously best player on JV and is doing great this season.

Would have been awesome to see you guys, and I do want to touch base with you at some point, just had a bunch of other stuff going on.

Thereā€™s no real definition, but here are a few indicators that I meet:

  1. You paid $1500/yr for college tuition
  2. You thought the SB halftime show was awful
  3. You spent 30 minutes in the rental car cursing it because the ignition wouldnā€™t turn when your actual car was sitting right next to it.
  4. You wonder if the characters in the 1940ā€™s movie you watched using the F word in every other sentence represented reality for those times.
  5. You remember when high school fights were settled with fists.
  6. You remember seeing Barry Parkhill hit that game winner against South Carolina.
  7. You saw Jeff Lamp miss a clutch free throw (J/K, never happened)

Guess there are a few million more.

Me too! Think it was the only time I ever touched the floor at UHall.

I think that was my only court storm. I sat in court seats for the one game Marbury came to UHall. Eddie Elisma, MAtt Harpring, Barry brother (?) era.

A college ex of mine sublet an apartment in the same building as Dingle and Shivers and she said they were always really nice to her and talked to her a lot. Iā€™ve no idea if any of that is true because she was a pathological liar at the time, but her stories fit what Iā€™ve heard about those guys. And she wasnā€™t a sports fan, so she wouldnā€™t know those guys from random strangers anyway.

Thereā€™s a piece of me that is dead after that monster brick.

First UVA game was ā€œwelcome to U Hall, Lefty, Tom Mc, Len Elmore, and the always popular Jim Oā€™Bā€. I was a grad student at Wake, drove up and back - same night. I was hooked.

First UVA court storms - 1976 ACC tournament.

Most recent UVA court storm - Indiana at the Omni. Yeah, I immediately committed to Seattle.

Most recent (first and only) Scott Stadium field storm. - FSU. Best memory of that night - hearing Aretha Franklin RESPECT over the Scott Stadium speakers over and over again as we waited for buses.

Not sure of the year, but Dean Smith and the snow storm in Charlotte.

Do I qualify?

Snow storm when Dean turned the lights out on us in Charlotte? That sir was 1993

The long delay changed the game. Stupid ā€œstorm of the centuryā€ on my first spring break at UVa.

But another delay screwed Carolina a few years later in Richmond. I was in the second row behind the basket that Darvin Ham destroyed. Texas Tech ran away with that one after the teams retook the floor.

Also, that same day, Iverson and Page routed Kenny Thomas and the Lobos.

And I donā€™t have to remind Fresh that the last time the NCAAT had come to Richmond (before 1996) was in 1990, when the refs swallowed their whistles as Bryant Stith was raped by DC (or Owens?).

Saturday afternoon was the first of many back-payments weā€™re owed. We still havenā€™t received reparations for having to play UAB on its home court in 1982 with UVa as the No. 1 team in the country. Such a fuck-job by the NCAA ā€” even 41 years later.

Nossir you do not. It was DC and beyond a foul. Bryant had 30 that day

For me special thing was it was Coach Hollands last game and he walked off the court next to me with his arm around my shoulders. I whispered ā€œyou shoulda played me coachā€
