🩼 Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

This thread somehow got me going down some weird rabbit holes. Did anyone know Jason Cain won the 2015 FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup with a team in Angola?

I was going to say something about graduating last century/millennium, but there’s probably a few non-alums here.

Anyone remember the game in Richmond where the ice from the hockey rink underneath was cooling the floor so much the players were slipping around because of the water condensation? Travis Watson face-planted when he tried to dribble drive and they ended up cancelling the game?

First game attended in U-Hall as a kid with my Dad in early 70’s. Against highly ranked NCSU team led by diminutive Monte Towe and strangest looking human being I had ever seen Tom Burleson. 7’4" body with tiny head perched on top. I think we lost by double digits.

In an ironic twist, the Capital One Center in DC is used for basketball (Wizards and GT) as well as Caps hockey and more than a few times they had the opposite issue, especially in the spring during NHL playoffs. The Zards would have a home game during the day, and the Caps would have a playoff game at night and the ice would be absolutely awful and chunky because it didn’t have time to set properly. Was blamed for more than a few Caps losses.

That was the MSU B10 challenge game. I was there.

Ha! An old farts thread. I know I qualify - my earliest UVa sports memory was standing next to Big John Naponick. who played FB and BB in the mid 1960s. I recall thinking he was the biggest human I’d ever seen. I was about 10 and he was about 6’10ā€/290. He had a very impressive career as a surgeon after UVa including significant contributions to public health in developing countries.

What are the UD and the UJ?

Man I never was able to use up those meal punches. Sometimes I remembered to spend them on junk at the end of the week but usually not.

University Journal? I remember the Dec or Declaration, but the UD doesn’t ring a bell.

I’m assuming ā€œUJā€ is University Journal. Being an alum of the Cavalier Daily, I have no nostalgia for it.

ā€œUDā€ is University Diner. Was on the Corner, then I think briefly moved to a spot in a shopping center on Ivy Road. Home of the Grillswith: two grilled, sugar-glazed donuts with a scoop of ice cream in between. Perfect nightcap. I think there’s a place on the Corner now that serves an upscale version, but the greasy downscale version can’t be topped.

Wasn’t there a slogan on the roof of Sarge’s? Something like, ā€œWhere students and townspeople meet?ā€

Sure was

ā€œWhere students, tourists, and townspeople meetā€

I went to that place growing up in Cville and then also as a student. Only missed out on going there as a ā€œtouristā€.
