One that Ive had in mind is Jarin Stevenson. Heās still not getting a lot of minutes and itās pretty clear at this point Alabama is going to over-recruit him. Already got Derrion Reid and Aiden Sherril coming in 2024. Sam Walters in his own class is outperforming him/going head to head with him. Not to mention $EC money in the portal which Nate Oates will fully explore.
I think Ive pretty much established how underwhelmed I was with Jarin. But at the same time the context was with him being a one and done. I think if he enters the portal AND his experience at Alabama has helped him to see that he needs some development, it could be really really good fit.
Would you take Jarin Stevenson as a transfer?
- Yes: High Ceiling/potential to make impact with bigger role and more minutes
- No: Need someone more instant impact and proven/not a gamble at the 4 spot

And Ill also throw in this one: Would you take Lil Peja (shooting wing at Stanford) in the portal?
- Yes. Need additional proven 3pt shooting and high level shooter at the 3 spot
- No. Not a need with limited roster opening projections and congests the roster outlook/overlap.

@J.Cotton I vaguely remember you as someone who was familiar with that recruitment/north carolina hoops guys in general. Any word on how Jarin is feeling at Alabama?
Edit: I voted yes in the poll above (I do think Jarin has a high ceiling and is also a big time fit with Tony which will lead to a lot of player development) but I do think itās a gamble. Because if it doesnāt pan out then you have 0 players on the team who can get their own shot established going into the season (Unless Gertrude, Leon, Bliss or Rohde becomes more comfortable. I think they get there too but thats also a gamble for next season to build your team on that)
Lil Peja is an easy yes.
I lean no on Stevenson but it largely depends on the options. Iād rather have Cade Tyson or TJ Powerā¦. Milan Momcilovic would be my unrealistic dream option for that spot.

Iowa state doing well kills that dream. Georgia also isnāt terrible which kills the Blue Cain or Silas Demary dream

Forget** those individual guys ā who knows if any of them even wind up in the portal. Iād just love to be in a transfer recruitment of that caliber again. Hasnāt happened since TM3, which was pre-rules change. So until it does, Iām gonna keep assuming our transfer sweet spot is low or mid major standouts and high major ānicheā pieces.
** Or donāt. Iām a big proponent of remembering guys.

I think with someone like Jarin, getting a dose of reality (vs the crap coaches tell you to get you to commit) might be helpful for our chances. Itās something that Braxton talked about after transferring.

Think kids we have had a former relationship with are also a part of that niche. Just that there wasnāt really anyone notable at the 4 spot last year (Minor has other power 5 interest and he was the guy staff keyed in on rightfully or wrongfully so).
I think even with NIL we can get good players in the portal. I think its moreso horrendous fit evaluations by staff then inability to land players other power 5 conferences covet (BVP had Ohio State and Wisconsin all over him.)
