Outside UVa Recruiting

The acc is a dead league and we need to be in the B1G. The acc as a whole is depending on Hubert and Scheyer’s XOs, along with praying that this year isn’t a sign of Clemson football going forward, to stay relevant nationally

We really need to shank the ACC with unc and go but we don’t have the leadership nor the institutional culture to do so. And it would mess with the alliance. In other words we are stuck on a sinking ship

I may not have said this 10 years ago, but as I age into my grumpy old man phase (mid 40s), I think there is some value in stability/continuity of rivalries and some geographic sensibility. I know none of us are Turge fans, but listen to him complain about traveling back from Minneapolis on a random Tuesday night in February. Not ideal. Plus does anybody in that league hate Terp fans? C’mon Terps – they say hate is the closing emotion to love … Ha ha!

For what it’s worth (not much), my preference here, totally ignoring any realistic constraints, is a smaller / more geographic or traditionally cohesive ACC or sub-conference, where do a round-robin, and maybe a couple cross-divisional games from the other sub-conference. No more than 16 games. And then various inter-conference alliance type deals where you play more cross-conference games later in the season. And then put a larger body in charge of November/December scheduling so we get more games like Houston and fewer games like FDU. Share revenue within that structure to fill the same gap as the buy game morass. Ideally a mix of fun MTEs in traditional spots, one-offs in neutral sites like the Jimmy V, and a lot more power conference teams having to play in low major and mid major band boxes. Who says no? Oh, that’s right – those who lack imagination and a sense for fun, and who fear change.

Is it weird you can now watch selfie videos of Tipton watching live commitment announcements? Yeah… that’s weird.

This reminds me (kid from Minneapolis), and actually apropos to the topic here, did folks see Jalen Suggs said he wanted to go to Minnesota but Pitino Jr gave him the cold shouder? Then two other good players (forget who) who excelled elsewhere basically said the same. Damn – that would piss me off. They’ve been wandering in the desert for 40 years and to hear that? Cold.

Eh no way to know if they are telling the truth. Blaming the old staff is an easy way for them to gain favor with the hometown fans without having to back up anything they are saying.

Similar to how Kobe (RIP) would’ve played at about 10 different schools if he had gone to college. Or LeBron somehow would’ve played at Ohio State, Duke, and Oregon.

Of course Pitino recruited them. That’s bullshit on suggs part lol.

FSU.

Don’t get the hype though. I watched his team play Blue ridge live and Maliq Brown outclassed him in the head to head match up. Brown was just more athletic than Green, regardless of how skilled Green is.

I can never tell if Brownell is a good coach or not. Jackel and Hyde sometimes. Good enough for a football school.

It did feel a bit Kispert-ish to me, tbh. To the extent it reflects reality, it could’ve been about football vs. hoops (not knowing if he was all in).

He’s not good and he’s not bad. He’s just fine, and if they are okay with that, then he will keep delivering fine teams. He’ll compete for the bubble, make it every 4th year or so, never threaten the top of the ACC, but also never be too bad. KenPom and his computer will continue to overrate them.

Actually, their 2018 team was really good. Gave Kansas a good game in the Sweet 16. Then Self pantsed K in the Elite 8, which was too bad, because Nova’s achilles heel in 18 was bigs. They were small and never played a team with decent bigs who could punish them down low, so Duke-Nova would’ve been a fun matchup.

Another thought – but back to the Bama, Arkansas talk. Throw in Auburn, too. Heck, LSU, too. Why not aim higher in hoops? As we’ve been saying, the ACC is dying for another power to emerge, and why not Clemson? But it won’t be that with Brownell…

I think Brownell is sorta perfect for what Clemson realistically wants out of its basketball program. Good enough that you don’t have to spend money to buy him out. But not good enough to warrant sinking money into the program. In essence, he allows them to focus solely on football, which is necessary because they don’t get SEC/Big 10 revenues

Yeah, my first inclination is why not have slightly higher ambitions like all the other football programs are now, but I guess Clemson theoretically isn’t rolling in as much money as SEC and BIG teams.

Although that said, they must have a pretty crazy donor base at this point right? They really don’t think they could get the money together to get to FSU’s basketball level? I don’t totally get it.

back in the day IPTAY ( their VAF) was far and away the biggest donor base in college athletics

Kinda related / kinda not related – is there a topic here for non-UVa ACC chatter? Or general college hoops chatter?

I originally started this one as ACC only, but it really is all recruiting outside UVa now. Why don’t you start one?

Good in season coach but bad recruiter.
