Planning the Spring Patch Job (blog)

It absolutely would have affected us and yes they moved it back because of us.
Hunter and Key and Clark did not shoot deep threes. And Guy shot a ton of twisting threes right at the line. None of Kyle’s makes vs Purdue were deep.

Every so often I go to you tube and watch the condensed UNC and Syracuse games (both on the road) from our championship season. Takes about 15 minutes and it is so much fun. Sort of like having an extra dessert after dinner. Man those guys could shoot.

Those condensed games are a drug and YouTube is the dealer. The algorithm just keep feeding them to me, and I keep coming back for more.

That’s how I keep up with most of the rest of the ACC during the football and basketball seasons. I just go to the ACC digital network’s YouTube page and watch the day’s action. Love that that’s a thing now.

Jay announcing he’s declaring for the draft. Appreciate the caption lol. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNJgR6LMsXEUueQZzV44R5hPIf6nUU63Q4sA6Q0/?igshid=1vu70w21mynx5

Huff at #83 on Vecenie’s updated draft board this morning. He has Murphy at #37

Yeahhhhh, I think we need to get used to the idea of Trey Murphy not suiting up for the Hoos again. It’s not a done deal but it’s certainly more of a possibility than it was a month ago.

I think Murphy is more Diakite than he is Kyle Guy.

Guy was maxed out at this level. Murphy still has a few things to work on that not sure the G League will help with.

It’s not a case of what he needs to work on at this point. It’s more of who is making him promises. If he trusts those promises or gets enough of them to mitigate the risk, he gone.

Trey is gone. He has potential and a ton of upside. I see him as JA with Dre’s upside. That’s not a bad position to be in. Worst case he goes pro and becomes a journeyman and makes some money. Best case he rounds himself into a high dollar contributor. Either way, there’s almost certainly more risk than reward hanging around Charlottesville for another year and essentially running back his greatest hits from the past season.

I’m not sure I agree. There is a very realistic world where Trey comes back and is a lottery pick next year, which he won’t be this year. That’s a big difference in terms of guaranteed money and length of contract.

That being said, if he goes it will still be a reasonable decision. I just think it’s much closer

It’s possible for sure I just don’t think it’s likely.

The money is obviously better if he goes as a lottery. But he could also back himself go a bit later and get paid to improve and reach that 2nd contract faster and get paid while the lottery picks are still stuck on lower paying team options. Get that Gilbert Arenas situation.

Plus you have to take a realistic look at next year’s UVa team. It’s unlikely that team is going to be loaded, or making a deep run and given the system that he runs, it’ll be unlikely that he gets to showcase the skillset that the NBA is looking for. I’d imagine the fear for Trey is he ends up like Mamadi or Jay (granted slightly different due to perception and potential upside). Jay and Mamadi stuck it out at UVa and neither had that moment that elevated their draft stock despite showing massive improvements. Mamadi is making it work now and I’m sure Jay will make the most of his opportunity. But for Trey, he’s got the table set for him now, no sense in waiting.

I think it just depends on whether you think your situation is like Dre or Mamadi. I think it is tough for a big to showcase their skills like that, but for a wing, the opportunity is there

And let’s give it a month before we poo poo next years team. If things fall right we’ll be fine

To speak to your point about UVAs team next year, that’s what lottery picks do… they come in and elevate your team.

Cade Cunningham is case in point (I don’t think Trey is Cade, just making the point).

It depends on what Trey and his family values. If the family needs the paycheck then sure so be it, but if he wants a more stress-free environment to develop his skill sets and develop as a person and leader then there’s an obvious case he can stay - we’ve seen Dosunmu, JRE and others doing the same in the past year.

And truth to told I believe both Mamadi and Jay matured as a leader and as a player the last year they played here. Especially in Jay’s case we saw some of that assertiveness that wasn’t shown in previous years. Again, it’s all about what the player values

Lottery picks certainly do that. But I don’t think Trey makes that sort of jump this offseason no matter what. There aren’t many like that in all of college basketball. While there is room for Trey to grow, scouts and NCAA teams have seen him for 3 years now, a lot has changed, but the ceiling for his potential is becoming clearer as we know more about him.

I agree with @norfolk_hoo Wings have a much better opportunity to show out, and the Dre/Mamadi comparison is a good one.

Not trying to trash next year’s team, I think it’s obvious I’m one of the few on this site that is not all doom and gloom about Virginia’s prospects. I think they will be fine as a team, but I also don’t see them as Final 4 contenders as of right now, doesn’t mean they won’t be good.

I also think Jay and Mamadi matured and became better leaders in their last years at Virginia and that’s valuable for sure and will yield dividends at some point. In the immediate future, NBA teams aren’t looking for 2nd round/low first round picks to come in and be leaders, they need to be cogs that know and understand their role. Something that Virginia has taught. them well.

Great representative of UVA!!

I wouldn’t be surprised either way re Trey’s decision. If you can get drafted, it’s usually a pretty good thing to do, and then you can spend the entirety of your day every day developing your body and game with no practice time limitations or other draws on your time. That plus the improved two-way contracts are probably pretty appealing.

On the other hand, I do actually think Trey could show more at UVA next season. While I think a lot of fans overstate a little how much our strength and conditioning team does and undersell how much of what we see is players working on their own in the offseason, I do think the coaches can help him get much more physically ready in a normal offseason, which is one of the reasons he came here in the first place. He also would have a different role and likely not just be spotted up on the three point line, so he could show case more skills (flip side of that coin is now all opposing teams’ will be game planning for him). Plus, he did go to Rice and then UVA - he might actually value getting his degree sooner rather than later. Might not be a major factor, but hard to know.

If I were betting, I’d probably bet on him leaving, but just feel like it’s closer to 50-50 or 60-40 than like 90-10.
