Me, too. But (1) I’m not convinced the current situation (more player mobility) is necessarily worse for them, and (2) I’d push back against the idea that players are easily swayed by candy and lollipops, and mid major coaches are the defenders (and knowers) of what’s in the kid’s best interest. Generally (at least IMO), the “tampering” is being facilitated by those we generally trust to have the kids best interest at hearts: friends, family, and former coaches. Do they have the kids’ best interests at heart? I mean, to the extent the answer is no, that’s more of a life problem than a D-1 hoops problem…
Anyway, I’ve said enough. On to the (allegedly) productive part of my day…
Yep - mid majors also recruit heavily into the major program dudes who don’t get a chance to play much. Like all the UVA guys who have gone elsewhere - some mid and some majors.
Works both ways.
I played D2 and we got multiple D1 transfers to come play who were 8th-9th man on their D1 team and became all conference - all Americans at D2. Or they got hurt at D1 and sat out and lost their spot as recruiting never stops. One of those guys became a 1st team All American with our program.
Put me in the crowd of not trusting mid-major coaches to always consider the best interests of the player. Consider this article. Mid-major coaches intentionally slowing down a student’s education and delaying his graduation so he can’t transfer. I don’t totally blame them though, a kid staying or leaving in any given year could be the difference between a conference championship and a new job or contract extension and getting fired.
BTW, the prediction in this article’s headline does not seem to have come true in the 6 years since.
Wow. That is going to cause some consternation at NCST. Any fans defending Keatt’s record (not that there are a ton) basically point to the injuries to their post players and says that was what derailed them, but when they’re back, they can get back on track. If Bates actually leaves, that’s a big blow.
Hey I would take Tomas right now - 6-5 shooter with Reece?? All day.
And Tomas was an underrated ball handler who never got the chance much to handle it with Clark there.
Especially in the pick and roll with Huff and Diakite.
I mostly meant in 2 man game - not as a creator on his own.
But…
last year he had a lower turnover % than both Beekman and Clark by far.
and in 2020
Super low turnover rate too - only Huff and Morsell were better - but I would argue most of Morsell’s shots were turnovers.
