I wish these whines contained more specificity: what exactly is the issue? What’s the promise that’s so bad?
We brought in two transfers who played 30 minutes per game, even though they were not that good in our system (or generally, IMO). Are we part of the problem?
Just wish people were more specific about what exactly is the problem?
We just need to be careful with white hats and black hats. We are all human. We all screw up. We are all wearing grey hats…
Hey if you come here we’ll play you… That’s bad for the game? Excuse me if I don’t grab my pitchfork.
Can’t imagine anyone esp someone looking to transfer is hearing the message. We’ll take you but you’re gonna ride the bench. Unless someone really wants to get a degree from a particular school
This is a good thing for players. There’s too many guys who enter the portal without a plan and a landing spot. Better to have a promise of an offer before leaving than to leave and get stuck without a place to play and a scholarship for college.
Put it in job terms, how many people put in their 2 weeks (or whatever) notice to leave their jobs before getting an offer for a new job?
You don’t really think it’s “just’ promise of PT do you?
He’s referring to tampering before they actually enter the portal.
But for me as a professional … I wouldn’t want to give my current employer 3 weeks notice without an offer elsewhere firmly in hand.
Edit - just saw your post 4547Lambeth
thinking the same. ![]()
I don’t know the situation being referenced, but as an example, I’d be pretty pissed if I’m a mid major coach and every year power conference coaches are essentially recruiting my best player before he’s thought about transferring.
Does anyone really care about guys who get stuck without a place to play? Hopefully that happens a lot so this trend dials back a bit. Most of these transfers are delusional
Why cheer for the downfall of anyone, other than Kihei Clark? (TIC, thank you Kihei for everything and we should literally build the Kihei to Mamadi pass statue but also go to Grad school somewhere or go pro overseas k thx) They’re just humans trying to find maybe a better situation.
There’s people who care in that they say that these kids should be smarter and stay at the school they committed to. So this is kids being smarter and now there’s criticism that the system’s broken. ![]()
Agree with this, but if I were that guy’s boss, I’d be pissed if he were just pissed, and not doing the obvious things in response:
My point is this: I have no idea because it’s a completely substance-less accusation. Folks should say what the accusation is, rather than just finger wagging at some vague issue.
E.g., is this a tampering issue? Is this an offering NIL $$ issue? More specifically, is the issue that coaches are offering NIL $$ without delivering? Or that they ARE delivering? Those are all different issues and Dickie V’s vague finger-waggy tweet doesn’t add any light…
I’m fine with the system. It’s supply/demand. There’s big supply in the portal and there might not be enough demand for some guys. The players want to be involved in the business, rightfully so, and that comes with risks like not being picked up in the portal. I just hope the seemingly new trend of bolting for the portal after a year of not playing dies down a bit and I think seeing guys not end up in a great spot may be a helpful use case in the future
Then maybe figure out how to run a program more like Jay Wright who gets very few transfers out.
Agree - look at Huggy. “Gee I have no idea why 18-22 year olds don’t want to deal with that guy” said absolutely nobody at all. Huggy seems like a great guy to have a beer with, and a less good guy to have deciding your PT and role on a court…
Tough crowd here for the mid majors. I have a soft spot for them. They already have a lot of disadvantages, so having to win annual recruiting battles vs the big boys just to keep guys they discovered seems wrong to me. If the player is out there seeking a transfer then that’s completely understandable and part of the deal for the little guys. However if the big boys are coming after the player first behind the mid major’s back then that just seems like BS to me. The mid major coach has a lot working against him in that situation no matter what kind of coach he is.
Guys being able to figure out their market or lackthereof before entering the portal will accomplish exactly what you want.
Technically, he will always be an alumnus. Contrary to the popular misconception, graduation is not a requisite for being an alum. FWIW, I had entertained the thought until a few years ago when I was corrected.
