But here’s a serious question: what about trying to use the backboard on FTs. The Wall Street Journal had an entire article about how it was the most efficient/effective way to shoot FTs.

The WSJ is wrong. Incredibly hard to bank in FTs unless you maybe did it from birth

Any old old heads remember the Houston guy that banked what would now be 3s from the top of the key routinely? Think was early 80s and may have been an Arkansas player. Cant remember
The exception is Rick Barry with that underhand free throw–would often use the backboard and spin quickly through the hoop

I always thought one reason not to shoot underhand is that it would screw up your normal stroke, or else muck with it, so I could never figure why we didn’t try it with Jack Salt
It’s also super hard to get guys to buy in on giving the underhand shot a try.

I always bank in the threes on those cheap wobbly driveway hoops. Backboard is so soft, the ball just drops in every time.
