Don’t think that’s true. He said a number of times during the 2021 season that home court no longer had an advantage at JPJ and missed the crowds.
And in multiple postgame gave interviews praising the fans for giving the team a lift. He thrived off the emotion, too — he was far more intense that folks here give him credit for.
I just finished listening to the press conference and, overall, I thought Odom did a good job. I think they’ve already hit the ground running which is good because they have a lot of work to do and relationships to build. I’d like to see them overspend on a top guy and then use that top guy as marketing to build a solid team around.
One of my reflections last night - when Odom was first rumored, there was chatter about Wake being his dream job (because of his dad) but hearing him speak, I wonder if UVA really is his dream job (because it was probably his dad’s dream job as a Holland assistant - and his dad’s path went another way).
I think a significant difference, WRT dream jobs, between father and son, is that Ryan Odom spent his formative years immersed in UVa basketball. Presumably, that has had a lasting influence on him.
I loved his approach to the interview question Why UVA? He came prepared and just slide the photo of his 12 year old self in UVA gear and stated it started here.
If there was one takeaway from the presser, it’s that Odom really, really wanted this job. One wonders if every career move he made the past decade was to position for this opportunity. Certainly sounded like it yesterday.
Forgot to give a shoutout to @DFresh11. The first person I heard/saw anywhere who said Ryan Odom to UVA was 100% done…Way ahead of the crowd. ACC Tourney Wednesday, got the message from Fresh that morning.
The more I watch the more exciting I am to have Odom. I couldn’t be more excited to have someone who is amped to the coach at Virginia specifically. You can tell how much Odom loves UVA and how pumped he is to be here at UVA specifically, which is rare in college hoops. TB’s pillars were his “why” for coaching his teams, and he could bring that anywhere. I think Odom feels he’s part of something bigger than him being at UVA and that fires me up. Wahoowa.
Do we have an official date when the pillars are knocked down in the facilities? Assume it happens this week (references removed, wallpaper replaced, etc).
