Is he really worth the drama? Is there any way this ends positively for UVA? And by that I mean let’s say Lucy doesn’t lift the football this time, Stevenson looks like he’s going to need some time to adjust to the college game and I’m not sure that’s his plan. 1) I don’t think he’s coming to UVA and 2) If I’m wrong, I just don’t see this as a situation where Stevenson’s plan and UVA’s approach to player development are compatible.
I honestly think we’re better off focusing elsewhere.
Yes because he’s the only recruit we’re pursuing that could have a Deandre Hunter type impact
This is the one. If I thought Stevenson had any chance at being Dre, I’d feel differently about him. KK isn’t Dre, but he might be Chris Mullen.

Well our pursuit of Stevenson isn’t impacting Kon so???
I generally agree with the sentiment that we should want and pursue players with more talent.
In this case though I really think this guy: 1) Isn’t ready to heavily contribute day 1. And 2) Wants to get to the NBA asap.
Both of those things are fine individually, but when they’re together I have doubts that it’s worth bothering with.
And if #1 creates a distraction/discontent because it’s impacting #2, is it worth it?
If he was a O&D talent, then I don’t care that he wants to go to the NBA asap.
If he was willing to develop 3-4 years, I wouldn’t mind that he’s not day 1 ready.
The fact that it’s neither makes me wonder what the benefit is.
My bet is Jarin will have one very good to great college season at his second school. Not going to go well at his first school whether it’s UNC, Bama, or UVA
Bama for 2, then NC State for 1. I can totally envision it.
I’m not seeing any drama with his recruitment. Seems pretty straight forward. Most UVA posters do think a player is drama when they’re considering any other school besides Wisconsin LOL
Recruiting is a crap shoot. You never know. While the expression of opinions is fun on forums such as this, most of those opinions are not very informed. Streaming some video clips on a computer tells us more than we knew of prospects 40 years ago, but it still doesn’t tell us much. Essentially, a coach has 13 chances to get eight picks right. With the transfer portal and immediate eligibility, the number of chances for a P5(6) program are actually increased, and a bit decreased for mid majors. Among other things, in the summer of 2013, I never anticipated that Perrantes would start and Hall would sit. In the summer of 2017, there was almost no buzz on Virginia’s message boards concerning DeAndre Hunter and his future role. On the other hand, there were all sorts of unrealistic expectations being voiced about Jay Huff.
Either Stevenson is coming to UVa, or he isn’t. If he commits to Virginia, he may be a star, or he may sit on the end of the bench a year and then transfer. I don’t know. What I think I do know is that there are no potential Ralph Sampsons on Coach Bennett’s radar. No one recruit the staff is pursuing will make or break the program. I’ll always be glad when one of his targets commits, and I’ll be a bit disappointed when they go elsewhere, but, just looking at the numbers, I know more will go elsewhere than come to Virginia. Fretting over any one single prospect here is probably a waste of bandwidth. Or, so it seems to me.
Lastly, some have said that Coach Bennett isn’t perfect, and that he misses on some recruits. They don’t produce. As I said, all recruiting is a crap shoot. It might be more useful to say that Coach Bennett took a gamble on those kids, and they didn’t produce. It’s sort of a cup half full as opposed to a cup half empty view.
I wouldn’t call it drama necessarily, but when a player and parents have an inaccurate read on the recruits readiness and ability to contribute right now, it’s a recipe for challenges.
Jarin’s parents seem like they are doing all the right things and really care about player development, but still seem to be holding onto his evaluation 1-2 years ago vs. where he truly is now relative to his peers.
Must’ve been a rivals exclusive at the time but there was more Dre than Jay hype on that board. Probably because Brad was a huge Dre guy from the day Hunter committed. Agree with your overall post though
This.
It sounds like Jarin/the family want a path that has him in the league in 2 years (or less). The only way that even potentially happens is if he picks a school where he’s guaranteed at least 30 mins per game, and are willing to make him the focal point.
There are schools out there that could make that happen, but not really the group he’s looking at.
While true, what bits we know of a parent’s expectations/evaluations are filtered through reporters. Even if we get sound bites, we don’t always know the context. The same is true with quotes from the recruits themselves. Having become a bit of a media cynic, I always have the suspicion that there are a lot of media figures more interested in hits than accuracy or context. There aren’t that many Red Smiths or Frank Defords working for ESPN, Rivals, 247Sports, or On3.
Dre would have been draft after just 2 years (incl the redshirt) if he didn’t break his wrist. So Stevenson just needs 1 strong/healthy season here, but it’s hard to see that happening if he reclasses and comes in so raw. If the family wants him in the NBA in 2 years, his best bet might be overtime elite or g league.
