Summer Recruiting

Rumor I’m hearing from camp is that Jizzle is able to cover multiple spots on the floor with ease.

Anyways, back to the discussion.

I mean Edgerrin James Sr is a grown man. He knows his way around things. His son comes to him and says “I want to be called Jizzle” and he says “Yeah that’s acceptable”? Honest to god lol

That’s impressive. 2024? I watch Dunn/Bond/Isaac^2 tape and I think THAT might be too much of a green banana**. Lol! (J/k - I can see why this stuff is fun).

** Hopefully not, but that’s for another thread.

Isaiah Abraham 3-3 from the field in the first half. Man. I know Kaiser is the priority in 2023 for that guard spot but if he and his dad think B1G basketball is best for his career/he gets turned off by us having Taine and Dunn at the wing spot, I would not lose sleep at all if we used our two guard sports on Elijah Gertrude and Freddie Dilione, and then go all in on Isaiah Abraham in 2024.

You’d get:

a High ceiling guard with pro potential right off the bat for 2-3 years (Dilione)
A secondary ball handler who can take over the point possibly if Dilione does bounce after 2 years but who also has potential (Gertrude)
High Level athletic wing with a really good 3pt shot who can defend multiple positions. (Abraham)

Again, I get the appeal of Kaiser both with him fitting the mold of Joe Harris/Klay Thompson and fitting perfectly off the court in the age of the portal/NIL but I am all for maximizing the number of ball handlers who can put it on the floor and versatile future NBA wings.

Basically I dont want Kaiser to be a hurdle to getting Abraham. But Im sure the staff with all their insight and understanding of the actual situation see it differently and are all about getting Kaiser now.

@haney Abraham is playing up U17 with team takeover. So it makes it more palatable (I cant watch U16)

I’ve heard Gertrude’s name recently. How long has UVa been involved? Interesting Bossi thinks he may pull an offer if he visits.

Yeah, the more I see and read about him—particularly your play-by-plays, the more he seems a perfect fit for us. His game fits our system, his academics fit the school, and his attitude fits the pillars. WANT!!!

Not a fan Indiana has both their 247 and Rivals people there chatting with him. Noticed TJ power likes all their recent tweets.

Meh whatever. Woodson is unproven. When CTB breaks out that game breakdown and comparison to Hauser and then the academic tour on his visit we’re the leader in the clubhouse. What’s IU gonna breakout, a Pinstripe photo shoot…..I worry more about ND honestly

They seem to have taken notice during the live periods. Bennett saw him place once, which happened to be his worst game of the spring. But he had a good weekend overall and in the game before that Vandross was at, he also had 9 assists.

It’s the same situation as Jaydon Young. I doubt UVA would have offered him without seeing more but after this weekend they might feel like they have to. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not who you offer, it’s who you recruit. They’ll have all summer to figure it out. The advantage to having him visit now is they decide to really go for him, they won’t have to wait on a visit later.

@HoozGotNext can you explain what these kids and their parents evaluate when they get recruited? I mean, once I saw UVA I knew where I wanted to go (and I was in the Chicago area without any ties to Virginia). If I played ball, maybe I have an internal rating like I have to wait for Duke or Kentucky or Gonzaga (but that’s maybe 15 out of 150 kids that get those offers), but then nothing about the school matters, only the basketball. Are all of these kids so different from “normal” kids that they don’t care about a two, three or, heaven forbid, even a four year experience. And they don’t even have to worry about admissions like the other 99%. Just not quite sure what enters into some of these players’ decision matrix. Maybe @DFresh11 or @chavlicek15 can chip in, but all of the mystery of recruiting is, well, getting past my understanding (and yes, I know these are 16-17 year olds we are speaking about, which does explain some of it).

Each one of them is different. A lot of them look at it purely as a business decision, where can I go that gives me the best combination of playing right away with a track record of getting guys like me to the NBA. And that’s all they’re about. Sprinkle NIL into the equation for some now too.

I actually think for most of them it’s more basic though. Maybe they have a qualifier or two. Location, academics, conference, etc. But they’ll go where they feel most comfortable, trust the coaches etc.

Some are more determined to max out their recruitment than others. Generally if your recruitment took off early, it’s wise to commit earlier. Most of the pre-July commitments are from players who were popular last fall. Coaches hound early targets in spring, and spring targets in summer. Everybody wants to be wanted. These players we’re talking about now are all spring risers. They haven’t figured that out yet.

Mixtape guys gotta watch their language. Seriously haha More than once I’ve started to include a video like that in articles before hearing foul language and had to take it out. Is sounding cool really worth less exposure for your work?

I guess that the mystery. There are about 358 teams that play D1 basketball, so looking 7 deep, you have about 2,500 players with minutes. There 60 players drafted each year. With guys in G league, overseas, etc., there’s another 1,500 - 2,000 players out there at a minimum, of which maybe 100-150 each year can even sniff the NBA, let alone get a real shot.

Maybe with cuts, retirements, etc for each NBA team, I’m guessing there are 120-150 openings per year. Outside of the top 10-20 HS players that have unreal athletic ability combined with basketball skill that you can project, that leaves 130-200 kids each year thinking they will be that special in 2-4 years to make the NBA for the other few spots that become available.

Long way of saying, hedging your bets with an education in a place you like maybe ought to play a bigger role in that matrix, you know, just in case you’re one of the 1000 or so players each year who were really, really good at basketball, but might make more as a barista than a professional ball player.

I got a feeling Gertrude ends up at UVA and I think Power does as well.
