Summer Recruiting

Posting instagram screenshots now since link doesn’t pop up image anymore. TJ Power won some charity award. I think what is more defining of his character though is that he doesn’t even have an instagram (TIC)

I don’t know why, but I get the feeling if Jaydon Young shows he can run the point and gets an offer, this kid will be the one. Just watching bits and pieces of him, I like what I see.

Who is the main competition for Power? Seems like he likes Indiana and Iowa, but that’s a guess on my part.

With power it’s a little bit of the “Whoever hasn’t offered him yet”. Indiana is trying to get him to visit. Notre Dame and Southern Cal offered recently and he’ll pick up more this summer like Dilione.

Literally the entire B1G for this one.

I’m kind of enjoying seeing which player Kaiser picks to represent the schools that just offered.

Lol. Luka Garza with the DC connection. Len Bias cause his dad was a fan during the time. I can only guess Johnny Davis for Wisconsin. Lonnie Walker sorta from the area/Philly. He loses me with DeAngelo Russell for Ohio State.

It could be that someone posted the math earlier, and I simply missed it. That said, I thought I would put forward the numbers as I understand them. Then, hopefully someone can enlighten me as to what we might expect.

  1. As of now, there are twelve scholarship players on the 2022/23 squad. I imagine that there is a remote possibility that the staff will use the last one on a 2022 recruit or a transfer, but, at this point, it seems unlikely to me. If it happens, the circumstances will be extraordinary, IMO. More likely, I believe that Coach Bennett will award the remaining grant to Chase Coleman.
  2. There are three players on the team (Clarke, Gardiner, & Vander Plas) who will exhaust their collegiate eligibility next year.
  3. There will be three more players who will have the option of using a fifth year of eligibility as they were active during 2021 (Coleman, Caffaro, and Franklin). The unknowns here are: will any of the three return to use that bonus year, and/or would Coleman, if he does receive the unused grant for the coming season, be offered it again?
  4. Should any premature attrition be anticipated? Of the veterans, I would think Murray would be the only possible transfer, and only if he doesn’t get the playing time he expects, and I think the only way that would happen is if one of the frosh performs at a level higher than any reasonable person thinks likely (the operative word here being “reasonable”). I have no idea about whether one of the frosh might leave.

So, with those thoughts in mind, how many scholarships do you expect the staff to use for 2023? I think a minimum of three is a given. However, it’s possible, even if unlikely, that they might have as many as six or seven to use. And, of course, none of this addresses the fact that Coach Bennett might not want to use the full complement of scholarships. Thoughts?

From what Hoozgotnext has shared, it sounds like its going to be a 4 man 2023 class with the possibility of a Mamadi big in 2023 who can reclass to 2022 if they find one they like.

Don’t like our odds when Kentucky is involved. Also don’t like our odds with when Stanford is involved regardless of the sport.

Yeah, Stanford has gotten a lot of really good talent on hoops recently, too, w/o doing much with it. Might help that Haase is on the hot seat.

I would kill to get Peja’s kid - those Kings teams were the last NBA team I truly loved (now I just follow players and storylines)…. but unless he absolutely falls in love with Tony and the school when he visits - like an immediate spiritual connection - I don’t see us having any real chance.

If he were east coast, maybe, but what is UVA offering academically and campus-wise that like Stanford or UCLA aren’t while being much closer to your family? And if you want to come east to get some distance from your family, we’ve like never beaten out Kentucky for a guy. I just don’t see any way it happens…. but man, I would be so happy if it did.

Do Bobby Jackson or Hedo Türkoğlu have any kids who are good at basketball? What about Vlade? Would love to see him grumpily smoking in the stands watching our games.

I don’t know if you are and old fart Hoo like me, and I know you mean recently, but the other old fart Hoos would like a word.

So, presumably, if all those things come to pass, there wouldn’t be a scholarship left for Coleman, and either Caffaro or Franklin won’t use their bonus year. Or, there will be a transfer leaving next spring. Interesting.

Coleman will never start a season with a scholarship, but he may receive a scholarship that hasn’t and won’t be filled during the course of a season.

Haha. I guess I’m a newish Hoo. The Leitao and Bennett years are all I’ve ever known. So I just meant recently. Would be great if we could beat them out again sometime soon. I’m still bummed about Reed Sheppard and hope we get him as a transfer one day.

Agreed. Worst part about Reed is if not for family ties, we win that one. Shoot, if not for the legacy aspect of things, would Kentucky/Cal have even wanted him?

Yup, he is the perfect fit at UVA. But couldn’t overcome all that unfortunately.

Gonna try to manifest it. Would have been nice to have grabbed one of these forwards straight up in in 2021 (COUGH DARON HOLMES COUGH) or 2022. Or even 2020 and redshirted to 2021.

We backed off of Holmes entirely by choice correct? That ones gotta keep Tony up at night

To be fair I believe the game Tony went to watch him he got completely dominated physically by 6’7 Justin Lewis of Marquette, and we had Kadin brewing. I do think they are different enough though that we could have run both of them at the 4-5.
