That said line has gone from 7 to 4 over the week. Likely due to their QB opt out.
I think thatâll help, but we see this stuff in the NFL, too, right? The last couple games of the season for teams that have been eliminated from the playoffs tend to have more guys nursing injuries, donât they?
Does anyone know how trellâs imaging went?
Totally agreed, but itâll help. It takes it from âYouâre allowed to opt out, in fact thatâs totally reasonable and rational, everyone respects itâ to âYou can skip the game only if you lie about an injury, and everyone pretty much knows youâre lyingâ, which for some players, at least, is a meaningful burden.
I just wish theyâd make more of the playoffs on campus. We talked about it on the pod, or maybe rather I just ranted, but I think itâs ridiculous that âthe grandaddy of them allâ is a quarterfinal game. I mean when youâre relegating your biggest bowls already itâs hard for the lower tier to survive.
Itâs coming. Just had to wait some of these bowl contracts out. Youâll eventually only have semiâs at neutral sites
One of the nice side effects of an otherwise unfortunate situation is laying bare the grift of the previous bowl system
Honestly, I think the bowl games have been pointless for a long time, with lots of players choosing to sit out to portal or prepare for the draft. Its just that UVA has been kinda bad for a long time so it mostly didnât affect us.
100% Once the playoff expanded beyond 4 and the other top tier games became part of CFP the whole thing became pointless.
At this point what are the top non CFP related bowls? The Holiday Bowl? Citrus, Gator? After that itâs the gimmick fest games and a handful of ones that will have 4 different names over the next decade.
The system had a time and that time has passed. Itâs the same as the NIT in basketball a pointless excercise that no one really wants to be a part of.
I liked the pod discussion, and you guys made me a fan of the idea of playing the games on campus, and doing so on the Saturday after the championship games. Forget about the âfull week of paradesâ and such. Just treat it like one more game (which it is). Let a few bowls survive (the big ones) but we donât need the dumb ones in uninteresting locations.
And to be clear the portal has killed the diminished NIT, too (plus the Crown)
Performance incentives in contracts if we wanna get really wild
I misread something on twitter. Either way, their QB is gone along with WR2 (Johnson) and WR3 (Manning, who logged the most snaps among their receiver corps at 597). Weâre still going into this game with similar losses â but as we know from Wake, QB is the most important position on offense.
Absolutely. You could make an argument that youâre doing a disservice to your program by playing in the NIT instead of recruiting the portal for that month.
Youâd almost be better off treating it like summer league, send some assistant coaches and managers, a few of the walk-ons, first years, and one or two guys youâre eying in the portal.
I really feel like if we see performances next week similar to last years quarterfinals (the teams with the byes were underwhelming) there will be a big push to condense the playoffs to being closer to champ week
There will come a day where I get over the fact that Virginia isnât playing the Pop-Tart Bowl. Today is not that day.

I feel that. We arguably got a âbetterâ game but I just wanted the full bowl season experience of the pop tart bowl if weâre not CFP.
Makes teams that opt out of bowls games and NIT ineligible the following year for cfp and March madness. Bet the participation picks back up
Oh yeah we talked that on the pod this week with Notre Dame. Teams who opt out without a coaching change should receive a 1 year postseason ban.
Unfamiliar with this one, but reads like gameabove is sponsoring the sports bowl
