Final thought on Power’s recruitment: It’s clear from the SI piece and his comments that he couldn’t say no to a shiny object. Everything he stated previously about what he wanted in a program would suggest Virginia over Duke.
There was simply nothing our staff could have done here once Duke offered.
This leads me to 3 conclusions:
- Deeper hatred of Duke.
- Less respect for TJ (fine if he realizes his mistakes and transfers here - with a public apology, including a few tears)
- Feeling fine about our recruiting overall.
- Now I’m a true believer that once Duke goes after someone in a serious way, there’s no winning. At least for the next few years, until Scheyer tanks.

SMH. He was recruited by Duke to be a bench piece AND HE’S OK WITH IT. And I wouldn’t say Duke is known for sharing the ball. Or player development. Or strength and conditioning (ask Zion how that worked out for him). But, and a big but, first words out of TJP’s mouth were “play style”. So I guess the pitch was you’ll sit on the bench at Duke just like you will at Virginia, but at least you get to watch a faster paced game with the chance it will tire our guys out so you can maybe get garbage minutes. No way you get off the bench at Virginia.

If Pace was actually a factor he would have been on the verge of commiting to Iowa or Notre Dame instead of UVA before the blueblood offers. And we wouldn’t have been in his top two over UNC.

He did a looootttt of retrofitting here and adjusting his goals and preferences after he got excited about the Duke brand. I wish he just said “Yeah I just liked the idea of playing there. It seems really cool” and not pretend they do all this other stuff.

Agree. The decision seems like, “Duke - shiny object. But I need to be able to convince people that Duke cares about me… hey, look at that, Scheyer said I was gonna be his number one boy.”

Was he really on the verge of committing to UVA, or was he hoping to showcase in EYBL and attract blue blood offers and go from there? Based on the SI article where he said he was basically committed to Duke after his one day visit there, I think some of our assumptions about where his head was at may have been wrong. Wondering if the assumptions about his affinity for Tony and UVA before the blue blood offers was a little off as well-- in other words, before the blue blood offers, his thinking was more along the lines of, “if I don’t get anything better, I’ll settle for UVA even though I’d really like to play for a blue blood.”

Dont think this was his mentality. Dude exploded in rankings overnight in July.
But yeah he was UVA’s. Even said he grew up a fan of UVA but that part isn’t as relevant as the imminent commitment part.
