Actually, if he left in the spring it would probably cause more damage to the program. There would be player attrition then. However, by leaving now, everything probably remains in place but Coach Bennett. The coaches, the players, and the systems he has installed. At least, for the season. If the players can get through the year successfully, and see that the program has maintained a significant degree of continuity, the thing Coach Bennett has built has a better chance of survival. Players might not leave. Thatâs the key. If Coach Bennett announces his decision in the spring, thereâs probably a march to the portal.
Couldnât agree more. After more thought, I actually think this is isnât the worst timing. Knowing Tonyâs character and thoughtfulness, heâs not going to just abruptly leave and screw the program. Iâm giving him the well deserved benefit of the doubt
I could see donors asking him to use more moneyâŚ. Maybe Aments name came up in that convo
Humor from a Heel
Youâre probably right, and thatâs not it.
Itâs just sometimes one smallish thing can flip your switch. About 2 years ago I walked away from a job with nothing lined up because I just wasnât happyâŚ1000 little things, but reason 1001 is what made me quit that day. It wasnât that one thing was bigger than any of the othersâŚI just said âthatâs it, not going to be unhappy anymoreâ.
Id rather do a real search. Would Sanchez be a candidate if he were still at Charlotte? No, he was on the verge of being fired there. Would Sanchez or JWilly be on the list for any other power conference job? Or is the only reason either is a candidate because theyâre already here? Thatâs not a good enough reason for me I guess. But maybe Sanchez knocks it out of the park this season. Letâs hope for that.
The regression was from the peak that Tony established. The program is still in a better place now than when he arrived. By far.
I do think Carla is wise enough to not do anything rash and take the interim tag off Sanchez. I will be there with my pitchfork day 1 if she does.
I expect a full search after the season unless we have a really nice year this year which would be a decent problem to have.
I am unfortunately pretty underwhelmed by her hires thus far, so not sure I love her doing a search. Luke Murray, Shaka, and McKay should be at the top of the list, Iâm a little nervous if we have to go beyond that. Not that there arenât a bunch of other good coaches that Iâd be happy with, it just gets dicier after those. (Not even that stoked about McKay tbh)
Weâll see how it goes. Much harder to win at Charlotte than at UVA with a bunch of top 100 recruits.
This season seems insanely important now. Iâm guessing a lot of guys will jump ship if we suck this season and we will have to start from scratch as a program.
Tough way to wake up. JFC
If this goes well for Sanchez, then itâs a chance worth taking for Tony. If this doesnât I think this pretty easily the most important decision Carla (likely) will have to make. Who you select to follow up one of, it not the, most significant coaches in athletic program history will prove to me if sheâs got it or not.
McKay should not be on the list at all imo.
Yeah I donât love it but his credentials are clearly better than Sanchezâs IMO. Murray and Shaka are a clear tier to me barring any surprisingly hire-able guys with success at another power conference school.
If we were to get Shaka a year from now, that would be a major coup and the program would be in good hands for years to come.
Still wonât be Tony, though. That era will not come again.
AAR should be on the list
Otz should be at the top of the list if weâre determined to hire someone outside. Iâll be leading the charge of calling for UVA to take both of the revenue coaches from ISU should the moves need to be made.
But letâs see how this plays out first. Rooting for Sanchez to succeed (and for Coach Elliott to succeed as well).
I suspect that unless Ron really hits out of the park, Carla is going to do her due diligence.
Out of the park prob equals at least a tourney win given current expectations, but up for debate.
Otz buyout is insane. Wonât be him.
