🏀 Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

Usually able to rejuvenate in preseason. Unable to do so this year

NIL, it needs some regulation.

Don’t love Boeheim using this for his own agenda.

This still doesn’t make any sense to me.

Nothing changed with NIL in the last few weeks and our roster is/was set. Coach out the year, and hang it up in the Spring…weird that it’s 3 weeks before the season starts.

I don’t understand what the hell is going on. This sucks.

My 4.5 year old son’s reaction…

Me: “Tony Bennett retired”
Kid: “That means he coached his last basketball game. Um, who will be the coach?”
Me: “Ron Sanchez”
Kid: “Does Ron Sanchez like orange??!?!”

I needed that.

(Also we talk a lot about retirement because the lady at the bodega we go to recently retired. As did his grandfather.)

So Tony’s last UVA game was that shit Colorado State beat down…. That’s depressing as hell.

Last two games are the Colorado St. game and NC State ACC game…

Well, it was fun while it lasted. RIP UVA Hoops.

So depressed. Anyone old enough to remember the Pete Guillen days knows what time talking about. Back to reality after a 15-year fever dream.

Fuck.

Retiring because of NIL right before the season when you’re not really going to have to deal with it for a bit is bullshit. There’s something else here.

If he did it to install Ron Sanchez that’s even bigger bullshit.

(I’m in my anger stage of grief)

4 years of progress and some question marks
7 years of brilliance (that 2020 team is in here because it might have been the second best coaching job other than 2019)
4 years of general regression and some question marks (corresponding with rise of NIL, transfer portal era, etc)

Arc completed. So sad. I’m getting drunk.

This is kind of where I’m at but obviously waiting to hear the whole story.

Nah there is some serious support for this program. We will be back.

Going to throw a theory out there. It’s probably not connected, but just trying to make sense of the timeline.

What’s the one thing that’s happened in recent weeks that we know about? The Mallory commitment. Unless my memory is slipping I believe HGN said NIL was a factor.

It could just be that Tony said to himself…you know what, this is a local kid, that I’ve known for years, and in the pre NIL era, he would have committed a year ago. I don’t want to do this anymore.

Ah, my sweet summer child.

Then do it at the end of the year. You just told all these kids you were taking them into the season. You just did ACC media day. This makes no sense unless something literally just happened or it’s health related.

Only things I can think of are players asking for more money right now or donors trying to get Tony to use more money and Tony not feeling comfortable with it anymore

It’s pitiful to see UVa fans (here and other places) showing their asses about Tony’s decision.

You’d have to be a complete moron to believe that Tony didn’t think long and hard about this choice and the ramifications of this choice.

He doesn’t owe any of you shit. And regardless, I’m sure his decision was made as thoughtfully as possible as it relates to his players, his staff, and the University while still being true to his principles.

Silver lining- if he’s using this to set Sanchez up for the job, he must think this team is pretty good?
