🏀 Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

The lack of suit and tie in the interview is my biggest take-away.

Continuing the casual approach.

I wouldn’t mind is he wore a stained wife beater if he can coach up an efficient offense (I assume defense will at least be solid).

You’re not going to see many coaches doing interviews like this in suit and tie. Introductory press conference is a different story but that’ll be reserved for a coach that doesn’t have the interim tag.

Here is hoping Ron kills it. Wins 23-24 games, 2nd or 3rd in the ACC, wins a game or two in the ACC and NCAA tournaments and gets the job. I would be happy with that.

I thought it was interesting how Sanchez seemed to answer all the questions as if were the interim coach not the head coach. None of his answers inspired a lot of confidence. Hopefully, it’s more down to his surprise at the suddenness of becoming the head coach and he takes ownership of the role throughout the year.

Also, he ratified what Norlander said about it being Jim Ryan and Carla’s decision to select him as interim head coach and not Tony’s.

I personally thought he did a great job. He is the interim head coach. He’s ensuring continuity from a successful program, and performance will determine his longevity. I like the situation we’re in - Sanchez gets to audition for the HC job for a year with a team he largely recruited himself; and we’ll see what determination Carla makes as she compares the bird in hand vs. what else is out there for us. I see it as win-win, and a pretty decent outcome given the situation.

I take it as being very deferential to Tony at this stage. Once he gets popped in the mouth and has to face the media fire he will turn into the big whistle.

that’d be both reassuring and hopefully offer some continuity rather than a full rebuild.

Reassuring because with this tumult and with a roster projected to be 50-70, he overachieved.

Continuity because that sort of success would hopefully keep some guys around.

That and his Charlotte record feels like enough for a 3 year contract. Still would hope they make some calls to explore what’s out there, regardless.

Ron’s a space cowboy. Bet you weren’t ready for that.

Pretty boring opening “press conference.”

He’s got a tough job, but one any competitor would relish a shot at. I’m pulling for him.

Could make a fun postgame presser drinking game. He slipped a synergy mention in too, covering all the corporate PR buzzwords.

I initially read this as if Ron would win games by the score of 24-23, and I thought “please, no! The offense has to be a little better than that.” lol

If Ron’s agent doesn’t land an endorsement from this outfit, he should be fired.

Ron still needs to leverage U.Va.'s core competencies to benchmark performance, though. Maybe throw in how video staff is using our tech stack to roadmap future opponents.

I support your use of stack!

Also, can we rename this thread to take out the part about Tony Bennett retiring. I still have awful spasms and start crying when I see that. My life was so less complicated one week ago and I don’t want to be reminded constantly of the interim regime (I liked the ancien rĂ©gime of CTB).

The recording of Sanchize’s QnA from earlier is up over on 247.

I posted it in two threads in here hours ago. This thread being one of them, maybe 15 or so posts up

Then I beg your forgiveness for missing it?
