šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

Some of the replies and speculation on here makes me sick. Wish the board would just be shutdown until CTB speaks.

Following that Woj path.

Sounds like there was a triggering event on that call?

Aside from the obvious sadness of losing a legend / end of an era, it just sucks that it happens now with the current core we’ve built. 7 four stars on the roster, and most of us are really excited about the future - particularly how it sets up for next year too

Now we got to sweat out player exits, potential coaching candidates which could just mean the roster is gutted this offseason, and everything that comes with a coaching change following a legend retiring. Not to mention we don’t get a retirement tour to fully process the end of the TB era. Were just left feeling shellshocked and gutted. And worried about the future to boot.

I’m still excited for this season presuming there is no mass exodus, but I’d be lying if I said this doesn’t temper that excitement considerably

All bets are off on our reaction and performance this season. We have talent but we may lack the iron will and focus required to win consistently.

Seth Greenberg on ACCN speculating how odd it was this was done after media day. Thinks something happened (to make Tony’s heart not being in it) between then and now.

I don’t think there be much noticeable change. Could raise the transfer risk after the season for some guys, but still depends how things go for them this season individually.

Completely expect Sanchez to be the head coach for a while. Regardless of intent, he’s being set up really well. Even if this season’s result isn’t optimal, they’ll most likely have a really good core still returning for another year. Removing Sanchez blows that up. But we’ll see…long way to April.

I’ve been a UVA fan too long to believe this

In this era we were going to be doing that anyway.

Was Sanchez on Mallory duty or someone else

It’s gonna be a tough position for Carla. Because I think in a perfect world she’d like to do a full coaching search and be able to pick from a host of different guys, but you also don’t want to piss on Tony and everything he’s built. If Sanchez comes in and knocks it out of the park, then yeah you give him the full time job but what happens if we’re just ok? Do you still ride out the process with him hoping things get better, or do you take the risk of moving on from the culture that Tony built?

I’m in the camp of letting Carla see what’s out there and hoping someone like Shaka or Otz is interested in coming on here. But who knows how realistic that actually is.

I agree. In some ways, the timing is better than if it happened in the spring. Everything he built is in place. If it is going to survive and go forward, this is the way to do it. There may be player attrition at the end of the season, but, if the players discover that there is stability and continuity in the program, they are more likely to stay than if Coach Bennett announced this in March. Now we get to discover if Coach Bennett prepared his assistants as well as he has prepared some of his players. Regardless, I am ever so grateful to Coach Bennett for all the joy he has given us since his arrival.

Amazing how multitalented TB was, he really does look older in that picture though, wonder what’s up with that!
