I was at Secrets Moxche Playa Del Carmen in March. Fantastic all-inclusive resort with great pools and tons of great food. Easy access to a couple of golf courses, including Mayakoba. It is an adults only resort, howeverā€¦

How long, and are you taking kids?

Itā€™s a good stop for a few days, but probably not a week or more. But itā€™s also convenient to Orlando, Jacksonville & Daytona Beach.

I also like the resorts in Playa Del Carmen/Riviera Maya. Most often have gone to the Barcelo one in Playa Del Carmen and the Valentin Imperial Maya. I meanā€¦youā€™re not really in Mexico, but as a fly-and-flop experience, itā€™s pretty good. And you can do excursions to Mayan ruins like in Tulum, Coba, etc. Would suggest flying out of Dulles to make travel simple (have also flown out of BWI too).

Adults only is good with us. We went to Cancun last year in August. Apparently the wrong time to go with all the seaweedā€¦ Iā€™ll have to look into secrets though because we werenā€™t super impressed with Cancun overall.

We stayed in Cap Cana DR the year before, thatā€™s been by far my favorite vacation.

Helen, GA is Bavarian I think. Is that the one youā€™re remembering? Iā€™ve only driven through on the way to hiking trails but itā€™s a surreal experience.

Thatā€™s it!! My wife and I randomly drove through it on a road trip down to Florida about 15 years ago, spent a couple hours there, it was such a unexpected experience

Helen is a prettt sweet spot its about 45 mins north of me. My wife and I spent a night up there last year. It was pretty cool. You can shoot the shoot the Hooch up there in the summer too.

@GulfCoastHoo was thinking of St Augustine for a week with the fam. I feel like weā€™re gonna end up in Tybee

Iā€™ve had a beer in Helen. Forgot the lederhosen unfortunately

Cabo is on my list for next year. My personal preference from looking at it is the hard rock resort but wife says if we are going all the way there might as well go to Hawaii. Hawaii is dream goal for me haha so weā€™ll see. Just afraid of how much Iā€™ll spend on that one.

Yeah lol

If you havenā€™t already, go to The Grey in Savannah (in an old bus station, thus the name).

Itā€™s incredible.

We loved Cabothe resort was awesome on the beach on a hill above the town we could walk into town when we wanted. The snorkling was good, swam with a dolphin loved it.

Iā€™ve never done Hawaii Iā€™m of the belief if I fly that far I better end up in a different country

Iā€™d like to check Hawaii out but Iā€™d be overwhelmed on things to do. Iā€™d want to hike the cliffs, see Pearl Harbor, do the submarine tours haha the extras would add up quick especially with tacking extra days on.

Hot take on The Grey, as incredible as dinner is, brunch might be better.

Funny story about flying to Hawaii. The flight actually isnā€™t too bad if leaving out of LA or SF. In 1999 I had to fly out there to do some Y2K system testing at one of our detachment sites, when I was stationed in Colorado with the USAF.

Flew commercial, and canā€™t remember which airline it was but maybe 10 mins after takeoff, they announced whichever traveler could come closest to picking the time of the exact mid-way point of the flight would win a prize. This was before the days you could just pull up flight trackers on your phone, so I start crunching numbers. They collected all the guesses and about 2 mins after landing, they announce I was the winner. Iā€™m traveling solo for work, and the prize is this oversized bottle of champagne.

Guess they get a lot more honeymooners than business travelers in Hawaii, so I gave it to a couple at baggage claim.

My 9/11 travel story is.

  • Two weeks before 9/11, I was in Gulfport, MS and headed home for the weekend, actually to Charlottesville, but to get there I had to drive to Pensacola. I got the airport 10 minutes before take-off and still made it on the plane by running through security and the pilot was waiting at the gate check-in to tell me to slow down as he was waiting for me.

  • A few months after 9/11ā€¦ I was flying out of Gulfport Airport to Richmond for Thanksgiving and I was there 5-hours early for my flight. They went through everything and had me taste my coffee on the way through (remember before liquids were not allowed through)ā€¦ also almost missed my flight because of how long security line took.

Complete opposite experiences.
