That wasn’t years later, it was 2 days. Literally 2 days after his father was killed.

Have you driven a Ford lately was one of the greatest things I ever heard at U-Hall.

The two idiots who got escorted out of the pregnant clam for their comments about Juan Dixon’s upbringing definitely crossed the line, however.

I keep hearing about stories about the UVA pep band and was it West Virginia? Was that a line crossed? Not familiar with the story (or the opponent if it wasn’t WVU).

No way. West Virginia’s mascot is literally a hick in a coonskin cap. Poking fun at how they think of themselves is on the level.

Didn’t they make a joke a about either WVU or VT’s homecoming queen being a cow?

Not sure if this happened more than once, but I was at the Continental Tire Bowl vs WVU in 2002. The pep band’s halftime skit made fun of West Virginia the whole time in the stereotypical way. I don’t remember specifics but I know there were a lot of pissed off WVU fans. We were also kicking their ass in the game as an underdog so they were probably already in a bad mood. I thought it was funny even though I was never a huge fan of the pep band.

UVA vs WVU 1985 in the rain. Family feud skit, Hatfields vs the McCoys. We were winning big, they didn’t like any of it.

The band was in 3 clumps on the field and I believe the question was to name something common in West Virginia. After each incorrect answer, one group jumped in an X formation. Playing a loud buzzer sound: indoor plumbing, education and I believe there was a reference to marriage habits I shouldn’t go into now. Pretty loud reaction from the WVA crowd as alot of the UVA crowd had left from the rain.

Yeah booing opponents in person during a game for whatever reason is fine. I do it too. I encourage it. One of the few ways fans can help the home team is making it tough on the visiting team.

Athletes should expect that kind of treatment between the lines. Some may even relish it and thrive on it.

You are correct. I believe Governor Arch Moore Jr. demanded an apology for that performance. He may or may not have gotten one from the UVA administration. I don’t remember. But I believe the administration began pre-clearing and censoring the band skits after that.

But West Virginia finally got what they wanted after the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl when Gov Bob Wise also demanded an apology. President Casteen obliged and the Pep Band never performed at a football game again.

How about UVA fans chanting “crack head parents” at Juan Dixon. That was awesome, right?

Look, anyone can boo or say anything at any time to anyone. 'Merica. But if I think it makes you look like an idiot I WILL judge you. So will others. But you won’t care because that’s just the kind of tough guy fan you are. And I’ll be disappointed that you’re that stupid.

Yep. One of the questions had to do with categories in which West Virginia led the nation. Number of houses without indoor plumbing was one; teen pregnancy rate was another; and high school dropout rate was another. It was pretty brutal. But also factual and hilarious. Some WV government functionary (Secretary of State?) was in the crowd, got his ass on his shoulders, and wrote a complaint letter. The UVA administration established a censorship board in response that reviewed all the Pep Band’s jokes in advance and killed the offensive (and funny) ones. The Pep Band endured a slow decline after that until they went out with a blaze of glory at the Tire Bowl. I was fortunate enough to have been at both games. The Pep Band had some really funny performances back in my student days, but those two may have been the funniest shows they ever did.

You know, I think you’re right. I don’t think it was the Governor in 85, it was the Secretary of State-who at the time was Joe Manchin.

James manchin. Joe’s uncle.

Amazing what you can find on google. They’re making a movie! Blog | Pep Banned

Just found this article. It wasn’t the Secretary of State; it was State Treasurer A. James Manchin, Joe’s uncle, who complained.

Haha - those were the good ol days. I recall the Maryland game in College Park where we brought the Gov out as guest conductor in a jail suit in ball and chains playing Jailhouse Rock. Maryland didn’t like that much either! If only the Pep Band hadn’t kept sneaking skits past the review committee…
