So we’re going to see a lot of Harris with Beekman

That seems to be a lot of folks’ takeaway. My takeaway/hope is that, instead, it means we have 40 minutes of giving opposing PGs a total headache of best overall defender + peskiest defender. I like that better

can one of you whisperers whisper anything nice about Dante’s shot? Or his ability to finish? Or anything that would make me feel better about his fairly bad efficiency?

The jump part is like a modern day Kenny Sailors

@Cuts_from_The_Corner ’s entry from the summer was the modern equivalent of Dennis Miller’s best contribution from MNF (“Jeff George throws a pretty interception!”). Basically that Dante very confidently rises and fires, even when the shot isn’t particularly good.

Sorry, I don’t need to be pre-registering my takes on things that haven’t even happened yet, do I? The future remains uncertain.

I’d point to Tony’s lack of patience with poor decision making on the offensive side, regardless of on ball defense. He hates dumb turnovers and bad shots.

Seemed pretty patient with Kihei in that regard…

preparing myself for Dante to be offensively challenged but kept on court because of his D

Imo Dante starting will be dictated more by matchups. Reece will fare well on-ball against 90% of college guards out there. Assuming there’s still one ball to go around, length should be prioritized to jam passing lanes and close out

I think we are letting our angst create narratives that don’t exist. If Tony was so dead-end on defense for playing Morsell would have played 40 minutes a game and Hauser would have never played a minute for us.

Tony has never played someone extensively solely for defense. He played Kihei a lot because he values multiple ball handlers and play makers on the floor together above anything else. Kihei had a 2 assist to 1 turnover ratio. We literally had no other playmakers coming off of the bench. Not last year. Not the year before.

Kihei Guy Jerome. Perrantes Brogdon Hall. Even Sammy Z and Jontel evans. Tony would play 5 point guards on the floor if he could. His best teams have those multiple ball handlers.

This year we have Rohde who will most likely be a starter for us. And Dante, while an amazing on ball defender, is erratic at times. It’s why Rohde was worked in with the starting unit moreso than Dante.

I generally agree with this sentiment, but I didn’t want to let my wishes influence my vote. I treated it like I was betting instead. I think that Groves and Minor are a pick ‘em but I think Harris -120 over Rohde.

I think Harris is both a situational choice and an early-season veteran experience choice for TB. But I fully expect Rohde to get solid minutes and probably more than Harris.

I think that’s right. If Dante is only as erratic as Kihei, I’ll be fine with it. But my sense is he probably has worse tendencies (think Nigel Johnson).

Also, Kihei was most erratic when there wasn’t talent around. Don’t think this year will be like those times. That gives Tony the choice to bench Dante for more stability and hopefully means Dante doesn’t try to take stuff into his own hands too much.

Where having Reece and Dante on the floor together could be a net positive is IF we take advantage of their ball hawking and turn them into transition baskets. That would be particularly useful those nights when our 3-point shooting is failing. That could be a spark.

Basically any offense that gets guards down hill. Like how we went 5 out at the end of the ohio game (a little too late) and use the floor spacing threat of Murphy Hauser and Huff for Reece and Morsell to attack the time.

I’ve got Reece, IMac, Dunn, Groves, and Minor starting. TB likes starting a traditional big, even if he doesn’t play very long. Pairing Groves with Minor helps with spacing.
